The sins of our fathers, the folly of man and the art of.. Robert Fisk
documenting history

Today we use telephones - or e-mails - but my telexed messages to London in those terrible years of war tell their own tales

Robert Fisk

02/05/05 "The Independent" -- The laptop has done bad things to us. I've spent the past year writing a history of the Middle East which has proved to me--quite apart from the folly of man--that the computer has not necessarily helped our writing or our research into the sins of our fathers.

I send good thoughts and wishes to this man in the Mid-East who keeps going back.

Everyone please get to know Robert Fisk. He is an incredibly knowledgable journalist with 30+ many years of insight.

1. Bill Clinton has archived thousands of emails in his presidential library
E-mails promise to provide important source material. Many e-mails will be destroyed but others will survive. Computer techs can examine computers to retrieve deleted emails. New technology offers new sources for historians and journalists, but it does make their task increasingly overwhelming since there is so much material to cover.

2. Get to know Robert Fisk, okay?
Pay attention to what this man has to say and to what he writes.

Only reason I posted this, it's the most recent essay I could find and I know right now he is either in Iraq or an adjoining country.

Thanks.

3. I did pay attention to the article
and responded to one small element about technology as source material. Obviously he has a depth of experience that exceeds most reporters and is thus able to summon information Google can't. But if you want to impress a point other than that made in the article, you need to present it.

4. I did present my point to you, and I hope others as well. Get to know
Robert Fisk and read what he has written over the years. He is over there risking his life to report on what is really happening and relying upon the friendships he has developed over a lifetime. I worry for him every day. He risks his life when instead he could be well retired somewhere. WHY? Because he truly cares. But that is just my very humble opinion of the man.

Enough of a presentation yet, or do you need more?

5. That's wonderful
and I'm glad to know dedicated journalists still exist. It seems odd to me, however, that you post an article yet don't want discussion concerning it's contents.

discussions over trivia.
