Democrats Aren't Giving Bush a Break This Term
Dean's likely rise to power is another sign the party is sharpening its differences with GOP.
By Ronald Brownstein
Times Staff Writer

February 11, 2005

WASHINGTON — In style and substance, Democrats are mounting a much more aggressive and unified opposition to President Bush than they did following his election in 2000.

With the expected selection Saturday of firebrand Howard Dean as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Sen. John F. Kerry's rapid reemergence as a Bush critic, and the sharp congressional challenges to Cabinet nominees Alberto R. Gonzales and Condoleezza Rice, Democrats are consistently choosing confrontation over conciliation in their early responses to Bush in his second term.

That approach contrasts sharply with the opening months of Bush's first term, when even some leading party liberals worked with him on education reform and several centrists supported his tax cuts.

But the Democrats' newly assertive tone may reflect more anxiety than confidence.

1. Well, Roemer is right, but neither can the party succeed as
the party of appeasement and enablement of those espousing morally bankrupt pre-Enlightenment values.

You just look like a bunch of wimps when you do that, and no one likes a wimp. Gotta show 'em you can fight.

3. * Morally bankrupt pre-Enlightenment values
= Age of Faith, use the churches to spread lies about what is in the Bible and steal from the sheep.

Don't these people realize that too many people can read now for this plan to succeed? LOL

6. About time.
Even the repugs. say the party has no platform..No new ideas...
It is the repugs. who for years have been undermining government , going back to newt's promise to let Social Security whither on the vine....
The repugs. have tared and feathered Democrats until we are associated with child molesters and porn dealers...Sleazy liberal values.. We need attack their values to discredit them as they have done to us...For it is they who are the corporate whores who undermine our government and country..
Go for the juglar. It had been their game and it worked...Show the country what corporate whore repugs are and mobilize your base Dr. Dean...
All we have to lose is Repug. crediability for it is their goal to rule or ruin and our country will be their ruination...
what 25 years ago we called Repugs. "Neanderthals." They are and what happended such thugs now have the high road..
Recall, we called Newt the 'bomb thrower..' Time to throw it back into their face.

7. Please Mr. Roemer
""We cannot be just the anti-Bush party," said former Rep. Timothy J. Roemer of Indiana, whose bid for the DNC chairmanship was doomed by opposition from liberal activists, particularly over his position against legal abortion. "We will always be a minority party if we cannot say where we want to take America in the future and have a positive and optimistic vision."
"

This is exactly the type of limp stuff that has allowed the coup to happen. Regaining power will not be easy. But your brand of appeasement most definitely isn't the right one.

9. Gee, you could have fooled me.
A baldface liar whose incompetence? permitted 9-11- is confirmed to the top diplomatic post in the country- despite the fact that she's anything but a diplomat?

A man who drafted "legal" arguments permitting torture and the abrogation of the Geneva Convention is confirmed as attorney general?

A massive sellout on tort deform- soon to be followed by another sellout to the credit card companies- which policy has been demonstrated time and again to hurt single moms (by diverting their support funds to the likes of MBNA?

ANOTHER BRILLIANT PIECE by the West Coast's own Howard Kurtz:

Ronald Brownstein.... don't be fooled by his subtlty. The man's equivocal to the bone.

11. Bloggers seem to understand
I am new to the DU, so please excuse my clumsiness. Bloggers seem to understand what many Dems in Congress don't. We are in a cold war to prevent the Repugs (with the help of the MSM) from turning America into a one party nation. I'm a Vietnam combat veteran, which is why I tend to see our struggle in terms of war (though I understand why many might not like such a metaphor).
I'd also like to thank you all. Each articulation of yours gives me hope that all is not yet lost.

12. Agree Completely - It Is War - I Have Been To Too Many
Dem meetings were the old ways of doing business are repeated ad nauseam.

I think that some people are finally taking the blinders off and understand that the "enemy" truly is focused on our demise.

13. Welcome to DU!
DU gave me the same hope not too long ago, and continues to give me hope. I don't mind you using war as a metaphor - it's the only thing these people seem to understand, and I think it is, indeed, a cold war - one in which the good guys will prevail in the end. :hi:
