Paul Krugman Interview (Realplayer) yesterday on NPR
NPR Interviews Economist Paul Krugman: How it was possible for a country with so much going for it to go downhill so fast, and why our leaders made such bad decisions?"

This IS A MUST LISTEN INTERVIEW 09/10

http://www.npr.org/dmg/dmg.php?prgCode=FA&showDate=10-Sep-2003&segNum=1&mediaPref=RM

Krugman has collected the last three years of his New York Times op-ed columns in the new book, The Great Unraveling: Losing Our Way in the New Century. In the preface he writes that the book is "a chronicle of the years when it all went wrong again -- when the heady optimisim of the late 1990s gave way to renewed gloom. It's also an attempt to explain the how and why: how it was possible for a country with so much going for it to go downhill so fast, and why our leaders made such bad decisions." Krugman teaches at Princeton University.

1. Heard it
Luckily, I work alone in an office and can have NPR on all day. I listened to the Krugman interview, and grew increasingly angry. The neocons are so bent on remaking this country into the bad old days of 1903 that they are willing to gut the economy just so we have to get rid of the social safety net. I was glad he came out and said that Bush and Co have LIED about things. What I'm wondering is how they will be able to blame Clinton when the economy collapses and the people are pushed into abject poverty.

I have this vision of the neocons living in some palatial fortress on some off-shore island to get away from the angry hoards of dispossessed Americans. Because if it happens like Krugman says it could happen, it's gonna be ugly. Don't the neocons realize that the reason FDR put the social safety net into place was to stop the outbreak of class warfare and the rise of the Communist/Socialist party in the US? Oh, I forgot, they don't read history, and don't care.

4. Not a rosy picture at all.
He seemed to be saying that it wasn't if the economy was going to crash but how badly. :scared:

5. I was surprised Krugman could not articulate the reasons or the results

of the GOP plan. Has the question Terry Gross asked him not crossed his mind - about why the GOP would engage in a plan that they knew would clearly end in failure and bankruptcy or worse? Krugman concludes they don't have an end game or ultimate goal...and haven't thought it through.

He also seemed to hem and haw over the question of just WHY the jobs that have been lost won't be coming back. Isn't it because those jobs have been eliminated or outsourced to other countries? If so why didn't he say that? Is he indeed a big free market advocate who doesn't want to stir that pot?
