Op/Ed - USATODAY.com
For weeks, Republican partisans and pundits have been chortling at the prospect of having Howard Dean (news - web sites) to kick around again. Their wish is about to be granted.
The former presidential candidate known for his spectacular rise and even more spectacular flameout last year is poised to be named Democratic national chairman on Saturday. Dean, who became one of the most polarizing - and most caricatured - figures in national politics, will now be a leading spokesman for a party trying to rebuild itself after a succession of frustrating defeats.
His task will be to prove the laughing Republicans - and the skittish Democrats who tried to block his election - wrong.
The primary job of a national party chairman is to raise money and build the organization. Dean, 56, starts in an enviable position. The national Democratic Party raised more cash than its Republican counterpart last year, $400 million compared with $385 million.
