The Historical Roots of Resistance
1. 1914-1958: From British Colonisation to National Resistance
"I am strongly in favor of using poisoned gas against uncivilized tribes."
Winston Churchill, in 1919, during the Iraqi uprising against British occupation
The US-UK war for the control of oil did not begin in 2003, or even in 1991, but in the 1920s. In order to understand the Iraqi resistance to the present occupation, we have to go back to the beginning of contemporary Iraqi history.<1> A history of colonisation and imperialism on the one hand, nationalism and resistance by the Iraqi people on the other.
Colonisation and Occupation, 1920-2003: Spot the Differences
"Any Iraqi found in possession of weapons must be punished with the utmost severity. The village where he resides will be destroyed… Pressure will be brought on the inhabitants by cutting off water power, the area being cleared of the necessaries of life. Burning a village properly takes a long time, an hour or more according to size."
Lieutenant Genral Sir Aylmer L Haldane, 1920<2>

If you want to know where the ‘war on terror’ is leading us, please read the next lines. They were spoken by Rush Limbaugh, one of the most senior of Bush's advisers, and they deal with the situation in Iraq: "At some point, dealing with these people is going to require taking some very, very brutal military steps. We're going to have to maybe use more than just conventional weapons on these people. You know, it's like trying to wipe out cockroaches with Raid. That's not strong enough. You know, you're not going to call the pest control guy and get rid of them... That's kind of like who these terrorists are. They're all over the place, and it's going to take massive, massive use of force at some point to deal with this, wherever these people are." (28 October 2004)

On the opposite side of those profit junkies who consider the people of this planet to be dirty insects, the unity of all forces that don’t want to submit themselves to the terror of the insecticide is more necessary than ever. Unity also with the American progressives who, after the elections, continue to fight courageously to build a political force that is independent of both US profit oriented parties, the Republicans and the Democrats. Unity as well with the people of Iraq who resist the US war machine. And unity with all those, in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, who refuse to allow a single dollar or euro to be sent in direct or indirect aid to the occupation of Iraq.
