"In defence of elderly hippies"
The Justice Department doesn't seem to know when to stop

BRETT BURSEY will be back in court again, fighting the forces of reaction, on June 24th. The veteran protester was arrested last October for trespassing at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport as he held a sign (“No War for Oil”) while waiting for George Bush to arrive ...

From the Economist.

Sigh, it would be so nice if US papers would print similar stories.

Also of interest, the charges were filed by Strom Thurmond, Jr (Yep: that Junior).

1. The silence by the media is deafening
Do you think lack of critisim of Bush is all about ratings,or have they been bullied.

I did a quick search to see if there were any more recent news items on Bursey's case and found just one update from August:

Judge to review documents in activist's presidential protest case
http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=1420652&nav=0RaPHhhj

(Columbia-AP) Aug. 29, 2003 - A federal judge says he wants to review security memos, e-mails and other documents relating to President Bush's visit to Columbia last October, when a local activist protesting the war in Iraq was arrested.

<snip>

US Attorney Strom Thurmond Junior's office charged the leader of the South Carolina Progressive Network with a seldom-used federal charge of entering a restricted area around the president of the United States. He faces up to six months in prison and a $5000 fine if convicted.

US Magistrate Bristow Marchant says after he views the documents he will decide whether Bursey can use them in his defense.

<snip>

Bursey's attorneys have asked the judge to dismiss the case. If the case is not dismissed, a trial will be held November 12th.
