This opinion piece just got posted on the BBS News web site and on Scoop.no.nz.

Notes pretty well how Americans are having fear bred into them from 9/11 and this administration, but that they aren't fearful of things that are really dangerous to them, the covering up of what's been really going on!

Forget 9/11 — Just For a Minute

That’s right, I said it. Forget about 9/11. Just put all those horrible images away. I mean no disrespect but I think it’s time to put things in perspective.

9/11 has become an excuse for those who would exploit it and the world is a sadder and more dangerous place because of those who have used the tragedy for their own gains. This isn’t exactly a news flash but it is reality. An unfortunate reality that you and I had no part in making. That responsibility lays with the people who are still scared and those who would continue to exploit their fear. And that fear is the very foundation, the very source of strength of the present administration. Fear is now the guiding principle of almost every aspect of almost every person in America today. We have all become afraid — just for different reasons.

Lately I’ve been doing a bit of research on fear and the odds we all face when it comes to our eventual deaths. Let’s face it; we’re all going to go sometime.

With acknowledgements to The National Safety Council (NSC), the FBI, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and some great work by writer, John Schettler (Scare Tactics), I’ve come to the conclusion that many Americans are afraid of the wrong things.

The Bush administration has been able to thrive by not only perpetuating the fear that “the terrorists will strike again” but also, they’ve managed to keep secret the reasons why the terrorists were able to hit us in the first place. You can see the results of their efforts from those who defend Bush by always going back to 9/11.

2. I can't forget about 9/11

I didn't own a computer until August of 2004. I didn't surf the internet for international news and domestic political news until the elections of 2004. The search for reliable news about candidate issues eventually lead to me coming across a lot of information regarding 9/11. I have always been skeptical of that day considering the marketing advantages of that particular date. Osama really had nothing to gain from it. I believed our government played a role. I am now more sure than ever our government was responsible and I expect and fear another attack. However I believe that if and when there is another terrorist attack on the u.s. it will again be perpetrated by elements of the government.

After reading your post I realize my fear is no different than the fear that is felt by those who believe Osama and 19 muslims carried out the plot.

3. As bad as 9/11 was odds of being killed in an airliner THAT DAY...

were still lower than odds of being killed in a traffic accident.

In terms of frequency and number of deaths involved, we're giving up a lot and spending a great deal for something that is a fairly small threat, even when terrorist get "lucky" with a big operation like 9/11.

If bikers get upset about helmet laws to protect them, isn't it legitimate to get mad about taking away our civil liberties to protect us (if that is the real motive) from a remote threat?
