Cole : Ahmad Chalabi Moves to Take over Iraqi Finances
More on the ambitious "shock treatment" of the Iraqi economy announced Monday. Apparently Ahmad Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress pushed for the plan on the Iraq side, even as proponents of the Washington Consensus did so on the American. The INC managed to get Kamil Mubdir al-Kaylani appointed a Minister of Finance and Banking. A Sunni Arab born in Baghdad in 1959, he headed a contracting firm in the capital and holds a degree in economics.

1. Ruh-oh
Look for Chalabi and said finances to disappear to South America...with a stopover in Switzerland.

2. Today in the appropriations committee hearing from the House
one of the democratic representatives (Ms. Katpur? from Ohio I think) tore into Bremer and one of her questions is: What were we thinking appointing Chalabi, a convicted felon?
Besides, she mentioned Bush, Cheney, Halliburton, Carlyle, and oil in one sentence: this war was about oil.
