DETROIT - Years ago, a magazine article called John Conyers, in his own words, "The Congressman from the Planet Earth." That meant he was as likely to be off at a seminar in New York about world hunger or a demonstration in California against war as he was to be found in his own Detroit district.
The writer meant that as criticism. Mr. Conyers took it as a compliment. "Those who have money have plenty of representation," he told me in his distinctively deliberate voice, perhaps unconsciously echoing Harry Truman.
"Somebody has to try to wake up everybody else." That's what he is all about. At an age when most men are retired, John Conyers, 76 years old, is raising a young family (his sons are 14 and 9) and still politely raising hell.
He has lived through vast changes in American politics. Forty years ago, when he first got to Congress, Democrats had immense majorities in both houses, and most proudly called themselves liberals.
