Schiavo's Life and Death

To the Editor:

The New York Times's grotesque and chilling disrespect for the sanctity of life has never been more apparent than in your June 16 editorial "Autopsy on the Schiavo Tragedy."

Terri Schiavo was a deeply loved daughter, wife, sister and friend. The fact that her brain was atrophied or that she was blind or could not have been rehabilitated doesn't change that fact.

While many medical professionals said she was in a persistent vegetative state, still other highly respected neurologists said there was a chance that she was not.

In cases where patients do not have an expressed written directive regarding end-of-life decisions and where the patient's guardian has a conflict of interest, it only makes sense to err on the side of life.

Terri's life and her death remind us all that life is fragile and must be valued.

Despite claims of cynicism and being "agenda-driven," we will continue to strive to protect our most vulnerable citizens. All innocent human life is precious, and government has a duty to protect the weak, the disabled and the vulnerable.

When the New Yorker (can't recall the writer -- maybe Hertzberg?) covered the Schiavo story, they used the phrase "when Terry Schiavo's body was allowed to expire". I thought that was perfect. Dear Mr. Schivo,
I apologize for Mel Martinez politicizing your late wifes condition for our party. Understanding that the autopsy has concluded that we were wrong and persuaded by the religious zealots of this country to trample on your rights of privacy and decision making for your wife. Please find it in your heart to forgive us for our transgressions and I vow to never speak of your private situation again in the public forum. I know I've been stubborn like my brother, the President, and not admitting my wrongs, but I wish to run for President so I don't want this looming in my political future, so I'll gracefully admit I was wrong. Can we please put this behind us? I really need to do something memorable that's positive before I leave my office.

13. JEB!!!

This was the perfect opportunity for Jeb to have his name back in the news. There haven't been any major natural disasters in the state or other Elians to send back. It's just been the ordinary run of the mill stuff like missing children in the DCF's care, arming citizens with guns in the event they feel threatened by another -- the shoot first, ask questions later bill -- no funding for the initiative, smaller class sizes, but hey we got the gambling bill passed.
