Flag Amendment Unfurls Fury
June 21, 2005
Bob Dart

If a biker wears an American flag as a do-rag to cover his sweaty shaved scalp, is it desecration? <snip>

Boy Scouts, for instance, ceremonially burn far more old flags in honorable disposal than antiwar activists burn to show their disagreement with government policies. <snip>

When it comes to fashion, however, the distinction between glorification and desecration may prove to be a slippery standard. In 1968, Yippie antiwar leader Abbie Hoffman was jailed and charged with desecration for wearing a flag shirt. Last month, Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, wore a nearly identical flag shirt while leading the Rolling Thunder rally for POWs and MIAs on Memorial Day weekend. <snip>

The Flag Code even disapproves of embroidering Old Glory on cushions or handkerchiefs. But a visit to practically any beach this summer will show red, white and blue stars and stripes on bikinis, men's boxer trunks, towels, caps, kites, beach balls and inflated air mattresses. <snip>

1. Bob, you don't get it.
If a puke wears a flag shirt, he's a patriot. If a democrat wears a flag shirt, he's a traitor. See how simple.

2. Punish free speech - the ONLY thing this amendment will do.
The ONLY thing!
THE ONLY ONLY THING THIS WILL DO!

And after all the bad-Bush news lately, don't ya like how this critical matter just sprouts up from House floor without a committee hearing? Is this better that a new terra-ist alert, or what?

5. It's the colors
It's easy to distinguish red from blue or white. That whole orange, pumpkin, squash, autumn leaf chart had me confused!

4. My two cents
If wearing, displaying the flag incorrectly or burning it is considered disrespectul, why does everything have a flag printed on it?

That, too is aganst 'the rulz' of proper flag etiquette.

Just slop some beans an slaw on it at the bbq, drink Mad Dog out of it, and throw it in the garbage when the party's over!

:sarcasm:

The logic of some people escapes me.

8. Mary Carey exposes her patriotism. No wonder the GOP was delighted to have

9. It's just like porn
I can't wait for some "patriotic" lawmaker to say:

"I can't tell you what flag desecration is, but I know it when I see it!"

10. Several years ago, Doonesbury did a Sunday strip which featured a flag...
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 10:51 PM by mediaman007
He drew a large flag in his strip, then dared the Fundies to dispose of the flag properly. Thus the paper should be burned, not recycled.

Speaking of recycling...perhaps Doonesbury should bring back that one...just before July 4th!
