Iraq: A bloody mess

A year ago the supposed handover of power by the US occupation authority to an Iraqi interim government led by Iyad Allawi was billed as a turning point in the violent history of post-Saddam Iraq.

It has turned out to be no such thing. Most of Iraq is today a bloody no-man's land beset by ruthless insurgents, savage bandit gangs, trigger-happy US patrols and marauding government forces.

Tonight President George Bush will make his most important address since the invasion, speaking to troops at the US army base at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He is expected to seek to assure increasingly sceptical Americans that he has a plan to prevail in Iraq, and that the US is not trapped in a conflict as unwinnable as the one in Vietnam, three decades ago.

The news now from Iraq is only depressing. All the roads leading out of the capital are cut. Iraqi security and US troops can only get through in heavily armed convoys. There is a wave of assassinations of senior Iraqi officers based on chillingly accurate intelligence. A deputy police chief of Baghdad was murdered on Sunday. A total of 52 senior Iraqi government or religious figures have been assassinated since the handover. In June 2004 insurgents killed 42 US soldiers; so far this month 75 have been killed.

18. Unwinnable means just what it says. Losing implies the ability to win,

but failing to do so. Unless we want to follow freep logic and "Nuke 'em all and let God sort 'em out," I think unwinnable is the appropriate term.

On edit: We could greatly enhance our ability to "win" by giving Iraqis Iraqi jobs, but as the place seems to be in a shambles, it appears we are too late for that. Besides, how would Halliburton make any money, if we did that?

Freedom to be killed in a roadside bombing or other random violence.

Freedom to be looted by an occupying power with no intentions of leaving any time soon.

Freedom to have their country completely trashed and ransacked.

Freedom from safe places for the kids to go out and play.

Freedom from safety and security in the privacy of one's own home.

4. I wish this were in major US papers - what a well-written and informative

article. I suppose here it would be considered 'too critical' of the war. Well, the truth hurts.

Especially for the Iraqis. I can't imagine another 10 years of this.

5. I would highly suggest reading the article, it is very telling and good

journalism, something that is lacking here in the States. I also have noted that more brave US Soldiers have died this calendar year than from Jan 04 to June 04..... Mr. Cheney should resign for his remarks, "last throws of the insurgency." The man has never seen war and yet he speaks with such confidence on the subject. His Halliburton ties should also be a cause for a criminal investigation..... New Gitmo jail being built courtesy of a no bid contract with Halliburton!!! just makes me sick!!

There was no doubt about it- A mission had been accomplished.

I think we need to find out. And then hold responsible, those who did the accomplishing of that so-called mission.

Now if you would like to show me how great thing are in Iraq feel free to post some pics or some stories to back up your claims. So far everything I've seen and read and all the soldiers that I've met that have been there say that Iraq is totally FUBAR. Open your eyes. The M$M is too busy following Michael, Terri and Lacy to spend much time showing the sheeple whats really going on in Iraq.
