Dear Diary …
As President Bush heads off to the G8 meeting in Scotland, our columnist speculates on what his personal journal might say about the environment.

From the shadowy maneuverings of a confidential source—whose identity I will not reveal no matter what you do to me—I have received a page from the diary of George W. Bush. Actually, it’s a photograph of the page. You have to love those new cell phones—they come in so handy.

Anyway, this particular entry has to do with the president’s views on the concern over global warming and other ravages affecting our fragile, ailing earth. Of course, as you will see in his musings, he doesn’t consider the earth fragile or ailing, and he hasn’t a clue what all the fuss is about.

Dear Diary:

Well, I’m off to this big woopty-do over in Scotland. Seems like there’ll be some fireworks, and not the fun patriotic kind. Guess people are all riled up over this thing called global warming. We had some mighty cold days in D.C. over the winter so I think that pretty much supports my position that there might not be any such thing. OK, I’ll grant we have some stuff in the air that probably shouldn’t be there—pollutants and all. But I’m working on that. Hell, I keep telling everyone we should go back to coal. Worked for a while. There must be some of that left in the ground somewhere.
