May 03, 2005
I say give Karl Rove (search) a medal, even if Bush has to fire him.

Why? Because Valerie Plame (search) should have been outed by somebody. And if nobody else had the cojones to do it, I'm glad Rove did — if he did do it, and he still says he didn't.

Why should she have been outed? Well despite her husband's repeated denials, even in the face of a pile of evidence and conclusions from a Senate investigation, it appears all evidence points to Joe Wilson's wife, spy Valerie Plame, as the one who recommended him for the job of going to Niger to discover is Saddam was trying to buy nuke bomb materials.

Why is this important? Because Wilson was opposed to the war in Iraq, opposed to Bush policy, and pointedly and loudly said so.

Consequently, it was of some interest how he got chosen for this sensitive job which people at the time might have thought would be a fulcrum point for a decision about the war.

You wouldn't send a peacenik to see if we should go to war, if we need to go to war, now would you?

That's exactly what happened, and as they say in the news biz: Inquiring minds wanted to know, "How the heck did this happen?"

Well, turns out the wife did it.

She touted husband Joe, her CIA bosses bit, and off Wilson went to completely knock down any notion Saddam wanted Niger's nuke bomb making stuff, which is called yellow cake.

Problem is, the report of the Select Committee on Intelligence says the information showed no such thing. That, in fact, it was still a bit of a mystery and Saddam could well have been trying to buy the nuke bomb material.

So why should Rove get a medal?

Let's just assume that spy Valerie Plame knew her husband's attitudes about the war in Iraq and George W. Bush's policies. Sending him off to Niger could be regarded as an attempt to influence national policies.

Where I come from, we want to know who that is. We do not want secret spymasters pulling the puppet strings in the background. That is something that should be out in the open and the person doing it should own up to it.

Rove should get a medal — if he did what he says he didn't.

That's My Word.

4. I think the Grand Jury has something for Rove too!
Although I don't think it will be the medal Faux news wants to give him. I think indictment has a nice sound to it.... They can say and do want they want, but it is the Grand Jury that will determine this case. The more they do this, the guiltier they look....

11. I got Karl's medal right here....

The "Kight's Cross of the War Merit Cross", awarded to civilians for extrordinary work in support of the war "effort"...

I thin Rove meets the criteria under the intent of the original award...

12. Gibson is right about one thing.
When he says....."Wilson was opposed to the war in Iraq, opposed to Bush policy, and pointedly and loudly said so."

That's because, Mr. Gibson, Bush's policy regarding WMD was WRONG!!!!!

Seriously, that may have been the stupidest piece I have ever read in my 47 years.

13. Gibson seems to be condoning treasonous conduct if it helps Repugs
to implement their RW PNAC agenda, IMHO. Sadly this mindset is pervasive among true-believers. I don't think Gibson should be hanged, only be banned from having his puss ever again appear on our TV screens.

14. Someone should send Gibson a calendar
His whole point is that Wilson should not have been trusted to investigate the Niger documents because he was against the "war". What war Gibson? When he was sent in 2002 to Niger we were NOT at war with Iraq. How can anyone be against a war that doesn't exist yet? He was only vocally against it when it happened using evidence he had debunked prior to the invasion.

This twisted logic really hurts your brain sometimes when you encounter it. This is the best they could do? Valerie Plame should be outed (ie. possibly killed) because she sent her husband to Niger for a political opposition to a war that didn't exist? It's gibberish.

16. Only a true conservative,
could shove as big a load of fat lies in their mouth as John Gibson. As if the Niger yellowcake would be a "fulcrum point for a decision about the war". The smirking chimp lusted for war as far back in 1999. He lusted for the Iraq war as much as he lusted for Jeff Gannon's bald head. Piles of evidence from a Repig Senate investigation? Piles of Texas ratshit, just like the report that the CIA "mislead" ratface into a war with Iraq. If conservatives are talentless otherwise, lying is still something they will always be good at.

In Case You Missed It: Karl Rove, Whistleblower

From The Wall Street Journal

Review & Outlook
July 13, 2005

Democrats and most of the Beltway press corps are baying for Karl Rove's head over his role in exposing a case of CIA nepotism involving Joe Wilson and his wife, Valerie Plame. On the contrary, we'd say the White House political guru deserves a prize--perhaps the next iteration of the "Truth-Telling" award that The Nation magazine bestowed upon Mr. Wilson before the Senate Intelligence Committee exposed him as a fraud.

For Mr. Rove is turning out to be the real "whistleblower" in this whole sorry pseudo-scandal. He's the one who warned Time's Matthew Cooper and other reporters to be wary of Mr. Wilson's credibility. He's the one who told the press the truth that Mr. Wilson had been recommended for the CIA consulting gig by his wife, not by Vice President Dick Cheney as Mr. Wilson was asserting on the airwaves. In short, Mr. Rove provided important background so Americans could understand that Mr. Wilson wasn't a whistleblower but was a partisan trying to discredit the Iraq War in an election campaign. Thank you, Mr. Rove.

Media chants aside, there's no evidence that Mr. Rove broke any laws in telling reporters that Ms. Plame may have played a role in her husband's selection for a 2002 mission to investigate reports that Iraq was seeking uranium ore in Niger. ... But it appears Mr. Rove didn't even know Ms. Plame's name and had only heard about her work at Langley from other journalists.

On the "no underlying crime" point, moreover, no less than the New York Times and Washington Post now agree. So do the 36 major news organizations that filed a legal brief in March aimed at keeping Mr. Cooper and the New York Times's Judith Miller out of jail. ...

In short, Joe Wilson hadn't told the truth about what he'd discovered in Africa, how he'd discovered it, what he'd told the CIA about it, or even why he was sent on the mission. The media and the Kerry campaign promptly abandoned him, though the former never did give as much prominence to his debunking as they did to his original accusations. But if anyone can remember another public figure so entirely and thoroughly discredited, let us know.

If there's any scandal at all here, it is that this entire episode has been allowed to waste so much government time and media attention, not to mention inspire a "special counsel" probe.
...

Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 02:49 PM by Mandate My Ass
Why deny his heroic act, thereby letting us poor Americans to be misled into thinking outing a CIA covert operative was a bad thing when indeed it was a very good thing? Why did he allow a two-year, taxpayer-funded investigation to go on? Why allow Bush to look bad when he had no reason to? Why didn't he just blow her cover overtly and expose her for the peacenik traitor she is? :eyes:

23. So, if we have some reason to dislike or disagree with a covert agent, ...
or any other agent of the U.S. government, it's OK to out them, denounce them, provide info about them to to the world including enemies of the U.S., and so on? In fact, if someone in government with the power to give out medals feels this way about an operative, not only is it OK for someone to destroy the effectiveness of that operative, but it's also OK to give them a medal?

OK, but we're going to have to come up with some new medals to adjust to this new regime. How about the Platinum Star for Treason? There could be the Poison Ivy Cluster for Denounciation. And don't forget the Zinc Star for Backstabbing. I'm sure the military will want to get into the game. Already they could have something like the Yellow Stripe for Hero Bashing: Karl Rove would deserve that one several times over, if only he had been in the military -- well, maybe there could be a special Chickenhawk edition.
