Karl Rove should be fired immediately (Ft. Worth Star-Telegram)
Karl Rove should be fired immediately

By Bob Ray Sanders

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Having a fox in the henhouse is one thing, but knowing one is loose in the White House has troubled me for some time.

The entire nation ought to be upset now that the president's right-hand man, Karl Rove, has admitted talking to a reporter about an employee of the CIA, even if he never uttered the name of Valerie Plame.

The sly, conniving Rove, known for his dirty tricks, behind-the-scenes maneuverings and below-the-belt political punches, has finally been caught in one of his own snares.

This time he has outfoxed himself. Based only on what we know now, Rove should be fired immediately -- no ifs, ands, buts or plausible deniabilities...

3. Thanks so much for the post...Fort Worth is REAL Bush land. Is there
only one major newspaper there? I can't remember. Only in Texas do you find metropolis's with one newspaper; Houston and Dallas being examples.

4.  THIS IS NOT AN EDITORIAL BOARD PIECE
The title of this post is misleading. The Ed. Bd. of the Star-Telegram has not written any such thing.

5. Let's test it shall we?
Is it an "Editorial" or "Other Article"?
Yes X
No

Did it appear in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram?

What was misleading?

7. Your title is misleading - Responses prove it.
Edited on Thu Jul-14-05 07:04 AM by MrTriumph
You can see by the early responses, posters here at DU think the Ed. Bd. at the FWST wrote the piece. They did not. Bob Ray Sanders did.

Today the Star telegram editorial board stated Bush should fire Rove IF it is proved he leaked Plam's name and identity. They never wrote an editorial demanding Rove resign immediately.

I suggest you note in the title the author's name rather than mislead DUers.

Here is how some others at DU start threads about what a columnist has written:

Krugman: FREE TO CHOOSE OBESITY?

Molly Ivins: There goes the electrical grid

If the test is one of fairly representing who wrote the article, you fail.

9. I would suggest if it's that important to you to have the author's name
in the thread title rather than in the message body then perhaps you should lobby the mods to pin a rule at the top of "Editorials and Other Articles" stating such. LBN has posting rules pinned which (usually) prevent opinion pieces from being posted there.

If you'd cool off a bit, you'd realize the phrase "and Other Articles" covers a lot of ground.

I posted an opinion piece. The article identifies Bob Ray Sanders as a Star-Telegram staff writer and it appears in the Star-Telegram, no doubt with the permission of the editors.

Quite frankly, I'm puzzled by your strenuous protests.

11. The title is misleading. The Star-Telegram said no such thing.

Career- I am not mad and never was.

But I say the title you have used is very misleading. You may not be required to identify the writer according to rules at this site, but that still does not address the issue does it? Is your title misleading? Read it yourself. Yes, it is.

The editorial board, which speaks for the paper, did not say Rove should resign immediately. If you want, I have today's paper sitting on the coffee table and I could quote you exactly what the editorial board of the paper said in today's issue.

Bob Ray Sanders is generally a liberal and I enjoy reading his opinions. But it is simply a fact, Career, that he does not speak for the 13 men (and no women BTW) who run the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. He has in the past- and may still- serve on the editorial board, but he is a columnist and wrote the piece as a columnist.

Obviously, you don't see how excluding crediting Sanders for his own piece is misleading. Well, your title makes it seems as though the Star-Telegram, a frequent and strong support of Geo. W. Bush, has jumped ship and deserted him over the Rove affair. Please re-read the first reply to your initial post. That person thinks exactly as you intended. But sadly, that person was mislead about who had called for Rove's resignation.

I might point out I didn't get clever like you did with the yes and no questions. If you will re-read my initial post you will see I didn't get nasty or sarcastic.

But, Career, if you can't handle valid criticism, I suggest you are in the wrong party. There is plenty of room in the cry-baby, holier-than-thou reactionaries in the Republican ranks.

15. Just had that caps lock thingie going on accidentally?
I reiterate...the forum is "Editorials and Other Articles".

There is no denying the fact that it's an "Other Article", is there?
Three times running (the first time "yelling") you've told me it's not an editorial...I know that. I never said it was.

Then you said "If the test is one of fairly representing who wrote the article, you fail."

Followed in the next post by "Obviously, you don't see how excluding crediting Sanders for his own piece is misleading."

His name is on the damned thing...it's right there at the top of the story exactly as it appeared on the Star-Telegram's website. No edits on the post. It's been there since the beginning.

If you want his name in the thread title, then by God get a rule made, alright?

Jeez.

Star-Telegram

The CIA leaker story would not have the legs it has today -- or the ever-increasing potential to be hung around President Bush's neck like an albatross -- had Karl Rove, lo those 21 months ago, said: "Yes, I talked to Time reporter Matthew Cooper about Ambassador Joseph Wilson's wife. Although I discussed the fact that she worked at the agency, I did not name her, nor did I realize that she was in an undercover capacity."

But in a very Nixon-esque way, Bush's deputy chief of staff didn't let out a peep until Time editors turned over Cooper's e-mails and notes to a special prosecutor. One e-mail apparently indicates that Rove had the aforementioned conversation.

When this story was first just a dust storm and not the political whirlwind that it has become, Bush boldly announced to the American people, "I want to know the truth."

The president is the one who took the situation to that point -- not the media or his political foes.

13. Rove Should Be ARRESTED Immediately!
and spend a few years in Gitmo without legal representation or Red Cross visitations, and then we'll think about the trial.

14. The longer he's not fired, and the more Republicans go to bat for him, the
better.

Roadkill stinks more each day, and the longer they have it sticking around, the more the stench will follow them (i.e., distroying the credibility of the administration).

16. 91% vote to fire Rove on CNN poll
On CNN.com international there's a poll asking: "Should U.S. President George W. Bush fire his deputy chief of staff Karl Rove over the CIA leak?" 91% voted Yes (9450). 9% voted No (979). Don't know how to include a link to poll.
