Making mockery of science and Kansas (Kansas City Star editorial)
The Kansas Board of Education majority is determined to drag the state back into national ridicule by discouraging the teaching of evolution in public schools.

...snip...

In June three board members who favor the religious theory of “intelligent design” introduced their own version of the science standards. This week all further discussion favoring evolution essentially was ordered to a halt.

John Bacon, an Olathe board member, warned standards committee members that, “We value your comments but don’t send us (a draft) where you rip out all these changes we just put in.”

In other words, We value your opinions as long as they don’t contradict ours. That’s an example of the kind of closed minds that have been running things on the state board since the 2004 elections.

Perhaps there's civilization in Kansas after all.

1. No, there's not civilization in Kansas --
Kansas City is in Missouri.

3. Yes I know, but...
the KC Star serves both sides of State Line Rd (unless we're assuming nobody in KS reads anymore...)

4. Pretty logical assumption, yeah?
Hee hee. Anyway, Kansans will probably dismiss this editorial as unwelcome interference by them damn Missourians -- nasty interstate rivalry they got going there. I went to the University of Missouri, and holy God! There is nothing like the Missouri/Kansas rivalry.

6. The Kansas side of suburban KC is represented by ...
a Democratic congressperson, and a pro-science Republican on the State Board of Education (there's just one Dem on the KS BOE, representing the area around the state capital).

And, anyway, Missouri is almost as bad with regard to Creationism.

And both states want to become centers of biomedical research. ;-)

Except that KC is in Missouri.

Can you imagine what it will be like ten years from now for some high schooler out of Kansas going out into the wider world, say to an Ivy League university? There she'll sit in some biology class wondering what this evolution thing is and why nobody around her seems to know much about ID. She'll wonder why everyone keeps laughing at her, and it won't be her fault, but the fault of those who forced modern science out of her school.
