Pentagon Blocks Release of Abu Ghraib Images: Here's Why
<snip>NEW YORK So what is shown on the 87 photographs and four videos from Abu Ghraib prison that the Pentagon, in an eleventh hour move, blocked from release this weekend? One clue: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last year, after viewing a large cache of unreleased images: "I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe.” They show acts "that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," he added.<snip>

1. Reality... is Scarey
But the more they try to hide this shit the worse the public's imagination gets. That bad huh? Who condones this shit? Oh yeah... Bush and his political party. And no I don't see a real effort by Republicans to hold Bush accountable. This shit is on him and the GOP!

4. I know I'm going to get pummeled for this opinion
because I want to know the truth & have them released but also I know that release will put soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan in even greater peril. Perhaps if public reaction expedites troop withdrawal, then the greater good will have prevailed.

trying to kill them. They're trying very hard. That's why we've been there two years.

6. I hear ya', but the truth is already on the streets in Bagdad
The word is out all over there, they know what went down by word of mouth.

The bigger concern is a further erosion of our world-wide image. They are trying to change "the war on terrorism" to a "hearts and minds" ideology thing. These pics will curb that attempt.

7. 'curb that attempt' is quite an understatement
if what I hear is correct, it will be apparent that hearts and minds are not the parts of the anatomy interrogators were focused on.

9. no.. it's controlling the American public
if the American public hears the shrieking it will add a lot of support for the anti-war effort.

11. danger
Do you honestly think the people in Iraq or Afghanistan do not know what goes on in those "detention" centers? A quick trip abroad, or even a conversation with a citizen from some other place will show how much we're not being told about our actions in those countries.Hope you don't consider this a pummelling. The public reaction hastening withdrawal is the greatest fear this administration has with regards this information. Public approval for the "war on terra" is already at a low ebb, and something like this would likely turn even the hard core committed kool-aid drinkers and makers against the WOT.

13. you're right
I didn't think of that perspective. I was examining my position & was honestly delighted that release of the photos might lead to demise of the Bush administration.
Then I thought that was a selfish attitude as I am a safe distance from the wrath it would incur. It kinda seemed like a path of logic the opposition would use to spin the issue.

10. blocked photos
what amazes me is the ineptness of the defense department to allow
digital cameras in such places!!! if you are going to turn your head
to this kind of prisoner treatment, why take the chance that people
inside would take the opportunity to record the abuses? I can
remember when I served in the USAF we were not even allowed to take
flight line pictures without permission..

12. Astounding excuse for not releasing
I don't know if they are still trying the argument that releasing the photos would violate the Geneva Convention. And this is apparently from the same legal minds who claim that the Geneva Convention does not apply to these prisoners. How can they not see the contradiction? It's a Republican thing.

They are definitely terrified of the truth being exposed. TERRIFIED.
