Case of C.I.A. Officer's Leaked Identity Takes New Turn
By DOUGLAS JEHL

WASHINGTON, July 26 - In the same week in July 2003 in which Bush administration officials told a syndicated columnist and a Time magazine reporter that a C.I.A. officer had initiated her husband's mission to Niger, an administration official provided a Washington Post reporter with a similar account.

The first two episodes, involving the columnist Robert D. Novak and the reporter Matthew Cooper, have become the subjects of intense scrutiny in recent weeks. But little attention has been paid to what The Post reporter, Walter Pincus, has recently described as a separate exchange on July 12, 2003.

Mr. Pincus has not identified his source to the public. But a review of Mr. Pincus's own accounts and those of other people with detailed knowledge of the case strongly suggest that his source was neither Karl Rove, Mr. Bush's top political adviser, nor I. Lewis Libby, the chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, and was in fact a third administration official whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed.

Mr. Pincus's most recent account, in the current issue of Nieman Reports, a journal of the Nieman Foundation, makes clear that his source had volunteered the information to him, something that people close to both Mr. Rove and Mr. Libby have said they did not do in their conversations with reporters.

Mr. Pincus has said he will not identify his source until the source does so. But his account and those provided by other reporters sought out by Mr. Fitzgerald in connection with the case provide a fresh window into the cast of individuals other than Mr. Rove and Mr. Libby who discussed Ms. Wilson with reporters.

3. If he cares at all about his legacy, he won't do that
I don't think Bushie cares about anybody else but himself.

6. they don't because they believe that they will control what is written
this is the same thing that was done when under reagan bush I and william casey went to europe to tell the iranians NOT to release the hostages until after the U.S. elections, in return for arms against Iraq. Carter lost, reagan won, and arms were sold to Iran

everyone was pardoned in that mess also

7. I got to agree
There will be indictments coming from this, and if anyone in the shrub administration is caught, Bush will pardon them. But if he does, I think this resonates like the Marc Rich pardon and will make another black eye for Jr. God what an utter embarrassment he is!!!

9. I'm not sure there is a good parallel here. The involvement of
people essential to your administration does not equate to an independent wealthy man who was the ex-husband of a friend/donor.

We don't know if there was any direct connection between Clinton and Rich. We only know about the connection between Clinton and Rich's ex who was a donor to Clinton.

By the way, the request for the pardon of Rich was submitted by I. L. Libby (Scooter), if I remember correctly. Perhaps Libby was one of Richs' lawyers.

This means that what resonates is not parallel because the relationship is quite different.

I agree there was a stink, but it may have all been part of their exquisitely orchestrated was campaign against the Clintons.

I don't know if Card is over Rich, but I don't think anyone is over Libby.

The connection couldn't be tigher.

Rich was an independent felon. And Cheney has a long history of being involved in wmd. (American Judas thread.)

When does a pardon kick in - after a person is convicted or before?

10. I looked at the DailyKos thread. Good stuff. The best statement
is the one where the writer states that the NYT was 'terribly com licit in the high crimes of the current administrations'. I agree - Ms and Mr. Millers don't operate on their own without an editor or editorial board behind them on something this important.

One thing is very obvious - there are only a handful of people who are working for the citizens of this country, but we have a lot of people working for corporations and criminal administrations.

Can anyone tell me anything that this administration has done that has been honest?
