Suppose I break into your home, steal something, and fence it. Caught red-handed, I am convicted of the crime. You sue me to recover the value of the things I stole. In a settlement, I agree to pay, but file a claim with my personal liability insurance company seeking reimbursement. When the insurer rejects my claim, citing my criminal activities, I sue them. How absurd, you probably think. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Another frivolous lawsuit has you shaking your head.
That is exactly what the Virginia Republican Party is doing right now. GOP officials were convicted of felony and misdemeanor charges related to illegal wiretapping and eavesdropping. In the following civil suit, the Republicans agreed to pay the Democrats $750,000 in damages. In that same suit the GOP stated it had no liability insurance.
But surprise! Last week the Republican Party of Virginia sued its liability insurance provider in federal court for $900,000 to cover the settlement plus attorney's fees. How absurd most Virginians think this suit is. We wonder, what has happened to responsibility? A frivolous lawsuit by the very party that makes political hay by bashing baseless lawsuits has us shaking our heads. <snip>
