Bush endorses 'intelligent design' - Boston Globe

Bush endorses 'intelligent design'
Contends theory should be taught with evolution

By Ron Hutcheson, Knight Ridder | August 2, 2005

WASHINGTON -- President Bush waded into the debate over evolution and ''intelligent design" yesterday, saying schools should teach both theories on the creation and complexity of life.

In a wide-ranging question-and-answer session with a small group of reporters, Bush essentially endorsed efforts by Christian conservatives to give intelligent design equal standing with the theory of evolution in the nation's schools.

Bush declined to state his personal views on ''intelligent design," the belief that life forms are so complex that their creation cannot be explained by Darwinian evolutionary theory alone, but rather points to intentional creation, presumably divine.

Bush's "Intelligent Design:" Teach Creationism!

Washington, DC: The Knight Ridder news service reported today that on Monday, George W. Bush "essentially endorsed efforts by Christian conservatives to give intelligent design equal standing with the theory of evolution in the nation's schools." The report notes that most scientists "consider intelligent design an attempt to inject religion into science courses."

The article adds, "Bush compared the current debate to earlier disputes over 'creationism,' a related view that adheres more closely to biblical explanations. As governor of Texas, Bush said students should be exposed to both creationism and evolution." Bush himself said to reporters, "I think that part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought. ...You're asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, the answer is yes." (Click for full story.)

"George W. Bush's latest statements are yet another example of this White House's war on science; apparently he would gladly add America's public schools to the 'flat earth society' to which the current White House science team belongs," said National Jewish Democratic Council Executive Director Ira N. Forman. "Bush is suggesting that our public schools teach 'different ideas' to their captive audiences of school children, regardless of whether or not they're rooted in science or fact. I have a suggestion: let's also teach school kids about my new 'theory' -- that the Earth was created by space aliens. You see, teaching my theory and teaching 'intelligent design' in public schools enjoy the same level of support from the National Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science: none. Zero. Zip.

"Public school science classes should teach just that: science. There is a time and place to teach religion to our children -- either at home, or in private or religious schools, or after the public school day and on weekends in our houses of worship. America's public schools are no place for this President to advance his 'flat earth society' mentality," Forman added.

4. these 'intelligent design' people sure are full of themselves... I mean,
what's so great about humans?

We're highly flawed carbon based life forms, no fur, no fangs, no claws, light density muscle structure, heart and genitals exposed -- we can't run fast or see far or fly or even sleep outside.

We have two things: A large (although not the largest) brain and opposable thumbs. Incidentally, our brain has just enough horsepower to get us in trouble, using our opposable thumbs to create untold destruction and wreak havoc on the planet.

We are one of the few predators who kill for sport, and the only species who tortures their own kind.

As I said, we are carbon-based. What's intelligent about that? Silicon would have been a much better building block.

Intelligent design? I'm sorry, I guess I missed that design review meeting. :eyes:

6. Bush Existence Disproves Both Intelligent Design and Evolution
Bush's stupidity is a prima facie proof that there is no such thing as Intelligent Design. An Intelligent Designer would not commit such an error, nor allow it to propagate.

Conversely, Bush shows that Evolution can include Devolution, when everything takes a big step backwards, and progress is wiped out. It could be a case of recessive and fatal genes, or a dead-end mutation. Or it could be the opportunistic conjunction of too much power and resources in the hands of too little moral character, which is ethics and not science at all.

7. Parasitology
The trait survives because it sucks big money from Fundies and Big Oil and Saudis. Kind of like intestinal parasites in dogs.
