There has been much in the news as of late concerning the outing of a CIA operative, Valerie Plame, by senior members of the Bush administration in retaliation for her husband Joseph Wilson's "outing" the administration's practice of manipulating intelligence.
As the political firestorm grows around the White House, there is another story that needs our attention -- that of former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds.
Sibel Edmonds was born in Iran and raised in Turkey and studied in the United States. She is fluent in several Arabic languages and was hired by the FBI in the days after 9/11 to help translate intelligence acquired prior to and after that terrible day. However, she discovered there were certain "rules" being implemented by the Department of Justice which Edmonds felt undermined the efforts of agents in the field fighting the war on terror.
One of these rules was the intentional withholding of certain intelligence from field agents. If intelligence regarding terrorist cells and their activities (i.e.; laundering drug money, weapons smuggling etc.) also implicated "certain countries" or "certain American business interests," that intelligence, no matter how vital, was not forwarded to agents.
