Bush’s neocon friends shocked as he backs the Darwin-doubters

Bush’s neocon friends shocked as he backs the Darwin-doubters

Sunday Times, 7 August, 2005

THE theory of intelligent design, which emphasises the role of a creator in the development of the universe, has received a boost from President George W Bush. He has called for it to be taught alongside evolution in schools, writes Sarah Baxter.

<snip>

Some of the president’s greatest supporters in the war on terror are shaking their heads in disbelief at his remarks. Charles Krauthammer, a neoconservative commentator, said the idea of teaching intelligent design — creationism’s “modern step-child” — was “insane”.

<snip>

Krauthammer’s scathing article appeared in the current issue of Time magazine before Bush expressed his opinion. He believes it prompted a reporter to ask the president where he stood.

<snip>

However, he added: “If you look at this purely as a cynical political move, it will help in the heartlands and people of my ilk care a lot more about Iraq than about textbooks in Kansas.”

1. "care a lot more about Iraq than about textbooks in Kansas.”
Exactly. Bush won't have as much opposition to worry about; it's a slam-dunk.

3. I like it when neocons call Bush insane. All we need is for him
to call them insane too, and they'd both be telling the truth, for once!

9. Hey, don't dis the 18th Century: the Age of Enlightenment.
That's what the religious right wants to purge from American memories, much less from its intellect.

4. So as long as Bush lets them stay in Iraq, they'll let him have the
intelligent design. ...And he's stating that Bush is insane? I don't think Bush is the only insane person in that article.

6. Neocons don't give a shit about domestic policy
so long as it doesn't hinder their foreign policy.

As Krauthammer says, "people of my ilk care a lot more about Iraq than about textbooks in Kansas."

8. So, Krauthammer likes to posture, but he lacks any integrity.
'Hey, folks, here's the truth, and what Dubya said was nonsense. But that's OK, because it will help us politically with the yahoos in the heartland.'

11. So, Chuckie cares alot more about "Iraq than about textbooks in Kansas".
He also doesn't seem to care anything about maintaining US global predominance in science and technology which is what maintains us in our position as a superpower. So I guess Chuckie really doesn't care about the US losing its status as a superpower. Or maybe he's just too stupid and fixated to figure out the connection.

I'm personally shocked that any Bush supporter would be shocked by this.

13. I know that's what Chuckie means by "caring".
The fact is that if our nation doesn't keep up scientifically and technologically, we will eventually be on the recieving rather than delivery end of bombing the heck out of.

I'm not necessarily convinced that would be a bad thing. At the very least it would help us develop a healthy sense of humility and the limits of our own power, as well as being an object lesson in hubris for other countries.

I'm surprised to see that Chuckie sees things the same way. Or more likely, he's simply too short sighted to imagine anything beyond the "conquest" of Iraq, and doesn't give a damn what happens to this country after that illusory goal is attained.
