http://jameswolcott.com/archives/2005/08/sprinking_holy.phpLeave it to Fox News to find the first neocon pinup priest to sign up as an on-air analyst.
I was channel-surfing this afternoon and one of Fox's "military experts" was holding forth on the deteriorating situation in Iraq. He didn't miss a single gung-ho. game-face cliche. Cable news military experts are as full of useless banalities as baseball managers--"We have play game at a time" "...stay within ourselves," etc--and he was blathering on about the Iraqis needing to step up to the plate to take care of their own security, and predicting a tapering off of the insurgency...an insurgency the force of which almost none of cable's retired military officers saw coming, certainly not this guy.
Then they cut to a priest in the other Brady Bunch panel. A handsome young priest, I might add. Very handsome. Better-looking than Tom Tryon in The Cardinal. Nice tan, too. And it looked like a real tan, not an orange spray-on Earl Schieb job.
Unfamiliar with him, I thought he might be there to provide a dovish counterpoint. I must have briefly forgotten that I was watching Fox, where even the doves carry bombs. Papal contributor (no fooling--that's his billing) Father Jonathan Morris said that he agreed with the other guest that Americans wanted to finish the job in Iraq, defended the war as just and said, and this I was careful to write down: "A baby has been born, a little democratic baby."
