Lachlan was unhappy, says Rupert Murdoch's mother
Rupert Murdoch's mother, Dame Elisabeth, has suggested someone outside the Murdoch clan might succeed him at the helm of News Corporation.

The 96-year-old matriarch spoke candidly to an Australian news magazine after her grandson Lachlan decided to turn his back on the family media empire and strike out on his own in Australia.

Unlike the media, Dame Elisabeth is not rushing to anoint her younger grandson, BSkyB chief James, as the new heir apparent to the Murdoch legacy. She insisted such talk is merely speculation, particularly in light of 76-year-old Rupert's longevity and his passion for News Corp.

· News Corporation announced yesterday that Roger Ailes had been put in charge of Fox Television Studios, previously Lachlan Murdoch's responsibility. In his new role, the 65-year-old will oversee the Fox cable channel and Twentieth Century Television. Mr Ailes remains as chairman of Fox News Channel and will report directly to Rupert Murdoch and Peter Chernin.
