Crawford Embraces Bush, But Not Protesters
Crawford Embraces Bush, but Not Protestors

Friday August 19, 2005 8:31 PM

By MICHAEL GRACZYK

Associated Press Writer

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - Things used to be pretty quiet around here - downright uneventful - until the new folks moved in about five years ago on a ranch just northwest of town off Prairie Chapel Road.

Then came the dozens of protesters who started camping out near President Bush's ranch this month, led by a California mother who lost her son in the war and insists on speaking to the president. Their reception has been anything but warm.

``I'm a Democrat and proud of it,'' Keith Lynch, 67, said while taking a break from trimming the brush around the flag pole in front of his 600-acre ranch near the Bush spread. ``But you've got to respect your country, you've got to respect your flag, and you've got to respect your president.''

Lynch and others around the town of 745 people believe that respect hasn't been given amid the protests in Crawford, about 95 miles south of Dallas.

4. I'm glad ole Bill is getting his jollies.
Kay and Bill Bregan love it when the presidential motorcade drives past the big eagle carved out of wood that sits out front.

``We stand over here and he waves at us,'' Kay Bregan, 65, said of her encounters with the president as his motorcade passes the eagle her woodworker-husband made.

``One day (Bush) drove by after he got a hamburger, rolled down the window and gave my husband a thumbs up,'' she said. ``He was thrilled to death.''

---

Wow, so he'll wave at some half-witted idiot, but won't address the mother of a dead soldier. Typical.

What they don't know is that while he's waiving, he turns to Laura and says:

"Hey, look, there are some more people stupid enough to believe my crap. God bless America!"

16. He's probably your typical East Texas Democrat
This area is infested with them: they vote in the Democratic primaries because their local offices are still largely Democratic (though this has slowly been changing) because of longtime post-Civil War anti-Republican sentiment. But they are conservatives, generally more conservative than most "blue state" Republicans and they vote for Repugs on the state and national levels.

I have known several people in this part of the country who are basically FReepers, but have claimed to me that they are conservative Democrats because they vote in the Dem primaries. Silly, since they'd vote in the Republican primary if the Republicans were more competitive in contesting local offices.

No doubt Keith is full of it; if he's a Dem he's a disgrace to the party.

I think left-wing papers are allowed to report on the existence of right-wingers. I have no doubt that the Crawford area is full of the sort of bumpkins described in this article, who cream their jeans anytime someone "important" waves at them.

15. Sadly
some people are totally incapable of learning, incapable of critical reasoning, but are still capable of having an opinion. That's a dangerous combination in a democracy.

"``Of course I hate to see all the boys and girls killed there,'' she said. ``But I think to pull out of this war would be the worst mistake we could ever made. ... We didn't get to be free without fighting for it. It doesn't come easy. I pray everyday the killing will end in Iraq, but I don't agree with wanting to pull out.''"

34. Disrespect is...
You might just be disrespectful if-

You don't care about dead Iraqis. Out of sight, out of mind.
You support the president even though the war was conceived of illegally.
You think the war is a good idea, yet troops are dying for no reason.
You don't do the research, and rely on the TV for your information.
You care more about your idea of who Bush is, even though you could care less about a greiving woman who honestly believes the war is wrong.
You don't know what DSM stands for.
You don't know the Bin Ladens were given free airlines tickets.
You think Saddam caused the WTC towers to collapse.

I don't know, I'm rushing out the door. But it seems like this could turn into a good tool.

a damn thing if it isn't warranted! Even in the military we 'respected" (saluted, said sir, mam; just went thru the motions) the rank, but not necessarily the person holding it.

Anyone who gets their jollies from an awol coward waving to them from his limo needs a life.

39. This is interesting...
'Those without closed ranch gates to their property have put up ropes, yellow plastic tape or ``No Trespassing'' or ``No Parking'' signs to keep others away - and next to American flags or banners that read, ``For Our Commander In Chief.'' '

A president is the Commander In Chief of the ARMED FORCES. Civilians in free societies are not "commanded" by their leaders.

No wonder so many of these folks think that what we're doing in Iraq is "making people free", it appears that they're a bit vague on the concept of freedom and liberty.
