Mark Green: We Owe Pat Robertson and Ann Coulter a Big Thank You
Mark Green/Huff Post
Sat Aug 27,12:19 AM ET

We owe Pat Robertson and Ann Coulter a big thank you. These two American mullahs of the far (f)right are helping to expose how The Bush Team is in the extreme and we who question this war – most prominently Cindy Sheehan – are in the mainstream.

By now Ann Coulter should have reached a tipping point where serious journalists would stop treating her antics and comments seriously. Suggesting that Timothy McVeigh should have blown up the New York Times building instead of the one in Oklahoma City should probably have been enough to ward Time magazine off its unctuous cover profile. Or perhaps it should have happened when she recently told an audience in Canada that they should be helping us in Iraq as they did in Vietnam (for which she was hooted down by Canadians who knew their history better than she).

But now that she has casually asserted that New Yorkers are cowards who would surrender to terrorists, it’s past time to call her for what she is – an ignorant parody of a right-wing nut who says things for effect and sales.

The Administration keeps arguing that the Iraqi insurgents are becoming more violent as America succeeds in Iraq. While that’s obvious nonsense, it does provide a reasonably good analogy for what war defenders are now doing in their Custer-like last stand. As all their arguments about the war have failed – both the reasons for invading and the reasons for “staying the course” – embarrassed proponents are increasingly retreating to the McCarthyism they are so skilled at. Hence all the desperate attacks on Cindy Sheehan and, now, New Yorkers. Blaming Richard Clark, Dan Rather, Newsweek’s Periscope or Dick Durbin was always the equivalent of blaming the radar gun for the speeder. But those polemical diversions did provide momentary relief for the chicken hawks. But now they’re forced to up the ante to both gain attention and justify their existence. Hence Coulter’s noxious crack....cont'd...

1. good post!
May she go down with the sinking ship or jump in her own slime and drown. Her on-screen antics are enough to make any sane person throw up--she's truly revolting.:puke:

3. Welcome to DU Surya !
:hi:

I agree! Most of these RW talking heads are doing nothing more than spewing hate speech and dividing our country more and more. Painful watching them get away with such vitriol. Unfortunately, we must wait for Republican Conservatives to get mad at them too!

Edited on Sat Aug-27-05 09:15 AM by BlueJac
Exposed all the right wing nuts that hide behind their faith as a way to run the world by saying things like kill them.

As far as Ann the Shame Coulter thinking people in New York are cowards...........ha. Who would ever listen to anything she says from here on out. Talk about nuts, she is a nut cluster.

The far right is over the top and losing control as the tide starts to shift to the left.

4. Reminds me of "Howard Beale"....now is the time...
Program Director: Take 2, cue Howard.

Beale: I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth; banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are running wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it.

We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. And we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be!

We all know things are bad -- worse than bad -- they're crazy.

It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out any more. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we're living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, "Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials, and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone."

Well, I'm not going to leave you alone.

I want you to get mad!

I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot. I don't want you to write to your Congressman, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street.

All I know is that first, you've got to get mad.

You've gotta say, "I'm a human being, goddammit! My life has value!"

So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell,

"I'm as mad as hell,

and I'm not going to take this anymore!!"

10. Gawd, wouldn't it be
cathartic if Olbermann just threw caution and his career to the wind one night on Countdown and blew up like the fictional Beale? Oh, to see that day where he'd say: "I hold my country's survival above my own ambition and I must speak out, whatever the consequences..." Unfortunately, he doesn't have the exposure the brave Walt Cronkrite used to.

12. KO did blow up !
I think that segment where KO went off like Howard Beale at the end of one of his shows, is somewhere preserved on the one of the liberal websites.

In fact, I have more respect for just about any other cause than wrapping them with Coulter. Even dog poo, yes, I wouldn't even pick up my dog's poo with a Coulter print out

7. A little bit of bullshit here, though
I was 40 blocks north of the World Trade Towers at 8:46AM on September 11 – and saw a plane sticking out of Tower One five seconds after it hit. I happened to be running in a Democratic Primary for Mayor being held that very morning and so was in a position to watch New Yorkers that day and the next several weeks demonstrate unmatchable courage and compassion in the most tragic of circumstances.

I was four blocks north of the World Trade Center Towers at 8:46 on September 11, and you sure as shit did not see "a plane sticking out of Tower One five seconds after it hit," unless you were seeing some ghostly after-image. That thing exploded immediately on entering. The only thing you saw five seconds after it hit was the last whisp of the tremendous fireball, the gaping hole, and the rush of papers floating east on the wind. BTW, I was four blocks north of the WTC handing out campaign literature for Mark Green and a city council candidate at 30 Chambers Street.

15. I wondered about that part too....
Wonder if he's being "fact check challenged" on the Huff post comment section?

What I'd like to know, is those few seconds after the first plane, was the tail of that plane still visible?

18. No, it most certainly was not
I was looking directly at it from about 4 blocks away. The plane went straight in, and a fireball emerged from the building. As soon as that subsided, all you could see was the hole, the smoke, and a million documents floating in the wind.

9. There was never a good reason to take Ann Coulter seriously
Ms. Coulter substitutes half truths and outright lies for facts and invective for rational argument. She is a racist and a sectarian bigot. She couldn't write a coherent theme to save her life. She is one of the most pathetic writers in America today of any ideological stripe.

11. Not by us, no...
But since when have the knuckle-dragging, ignorant ideologues that she's speaking to been looking for 'rational argument' or 'coherent themes'? :eyes:

16. In other words,
a WingNut? Of course, the right does accuse Michael Moore of doing the same thing, but I never got that spin either.

17. Moore is guilty of some of that kind of thing
However, he acknowledges it in a way Ms. Coulter and those of her ilk do not. By doing so, he at least invites those who have listened to his point of view to listen also to an opposing view point.

Moore is more of a satirist than a propagandist. Ms. Coulter is simply a propagandist. Moore seeks to be part of a discussion; Ms. Coulter seeks to shut down rational discourse.
