NYT: The Flying Spaghetti Monster
It takes the Arts Section to show how foolish the Times big Intelligent Design Series really is.

4. Here is four paragraphs.
"But Is There Intelligent Spaghetti Out There?

By SARAH BOXER
Is the super-intelligent, super-popular god known as the Flying Spaghetti Monster any match for the prophets of intelligent design?

This month, the Kansas State Board of Education gave preliminary approval to allow teaching alternatives to evolution like intelligent design (the theory that a smart being designed the universe). And President Bush and Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee both gave the thumbs up to teaching intelligent design.

Long before that, Bobby Henderson, a 25-year-old with a physics degree from Oregon State University, had a divine vision. An intelligent god, a Flying Spaghetti Monster, he said, "revealed himself to me in a dream."

He posted a sketch on his Web site, venganza.org, showing an airborne tangle of spaghetti and meatballs with two eyes looming over a mountain, trees and a stick man labeled "midgit." Prayers to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, his site says, end with "ramen," not "amen."

6. Praise be the blessed noodly appendage.
<snip>
what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage. We have numerous texts that describe in detail how this can be possible and the reasons why He does this.
</snip>

I bow in humble worship to the holy noodly appendage.

<snip>
Furthermore, it is disrespectful to teach our beliefs without wearing His chosen outfit, which of course is full pirate regalia. I cannot stress the importance of this enough, and unfortunately cannot describe in detail why this must be done as I fear this letter is already becoming too long. The concise explanation is that He becomes angry if we don’t.
</snip>

Damn,,, I need to get my pirate regalia back from the dry cleaners.

8. I want an official Flying Spaghetti Monster pirate costume! Check it out!
The only thing I want to know is if there is an official pirate costume(tm) I have to buy or if I can make my own. Also, can I pray directly to the spaghetti monster or do I have to donate to and pray through a third party?

Thanks,
Matt

9. Commentary from a fundy.
I thought this article was brilliant and hilarious, so I sent it to everyone on my mailing list.

Here's one mind-boggling response I got:
I sure hope that not too many vulnerable and impressionable teenagers take this seriously. I know of at least two young people who actually believe "The Da Vinci Code" is true, so I won't be surprised if this parody develops into a new cult. Yeah, it's funny -- and potentially dangerous.

And here's my reply:
You are joking, I hope. Rather than worrying about how "dangerous" satire and parody might be to "vulnerable and impressionable teenagers," I'm more inclined to wonder what the hell's wrong with a society that raises its kids to be so incredibly gullible and stupid, lacking anything whatsoever in critical thinking skills. No wonder we're the laughing stock of the rest of the civilized world. Good grief.

Unbelievable. :crazy:

10. Hear hear. Excellent response. It is time we started making fun of
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 04:49 PM by yellowcanine
the ridiculous positions that fundamentalists take in the public arena. And that includes the asinine argument that gay marriage is somehow a threat to hetero marriage. Satire of this type is not anti-Christian or even anti-religion. It is anti-theocratic despotism and satire is an excellent weapon to use against all forms of despotism.

As for the DaVinci Code, I consider it fair fiction, but it has as more TRUTH in it than the heretical "Left Behind" series does.

They just don't get it when they are being made fun of. :crazy:

13. The FSM is great because open ridicule is the best response to ID
The ID proponents are either unwilling or unable to participate in a coherent and honest scientific debate, so we might as well just use satire and ridicule to let them know where they stand.

May you all be touched by his noodly appendage.

Ramen.
