The Brief on Judge Roberts
On the Far Right of a Far Right Party
The Brief on Judge Roberts

By ELAINE CASSEL

I have to admit that I was fooled by the Cleaver family images displayed by the Roberts family that sultry July night. Not a bad guy, I thought. Doesn't look like a Scalia. Doesn't talk like a Scalia. Maybe President Bush won't make good on his nuclear-type promises to put a Thomas or Scalia on the high court. Maybe Roberts will be a guy with a nice demeanor, a bright man and one who is - as judges should be - fair and open-minded.

No such luck. While others were sleeping, I was up reading memoranda and briefs from days when Roberts was a political operative disguised as a lawyer working in the Reagan administration. It did not take long for the nice-guy image to fade. In its place is a judge in the mold of Scalia more than Thomas, one who is mightily impressed with himself and his intellect and one who does not care a flip for everyday Americans.

>snip<

Roberts would like to overturn federal laws and regulations that bring a modicum of justice to everyday citizens. Like the Voting Rights Act. Roberts came out strongly against portions of it as a lawyer working in the Reagan White House. He argued that blacks did not have to have "real" voting rights - the government just had to make people think that they had some rights.

Those who claim not to know what Roberts thinks have not done their homework. Roberts is at the far-right of a far-right party, the party that thinks it has the corner on being right. Roberts may be right for the powerful and the wealthy, but he is not right for ordinary Americans, those of us who pay his salary.

1. Roberts is scary
He is anti minorities
He is anti choice
He is pro putting Christianity in as the state religion

With the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals saying that Bush has the right to detain people without charge and without attorneys on his word that they are "enemy combantants", I am really fearful for what happens to the Supreme Court. With Roberts as its Chief, I doubt if the 4th's decision will be overturned. I see it as the first step in an outright takeover of the government by Bushco, with elections cancelled and Bush becoming a dictator.

4. The ruling of the 4th Circuit Court is frightening.
I'm afraid Roberts will pass senate confirmations regardless of our protests. I also think it's one of the first steps in a takeover of the government, we have witnessed a police state atmosphere in New Orleans today. There are many areas not flooded yet residents are forced from their homes with no place to go.

We are in for dark times.

2. Yes, Roberts is a danger to us all. While Katrina is a cause that deserves
our attention and may be the kick in the ass that the bush** administration richly deserves, we have to, have to, have to keep our eyes on the Roberts nomination. Yes, Katrina destroyed a major American city, caused the deaths of thousands of innocent people. The Roberts nomination has the same potential but it's reach is over the entire United States.

We are smart enough to monitor more than one sitation at a time. We just need to remember to expend the time and energy on this, don't get totally burned out on Katrina.

Rememer that old typing exercise, the one that everyone had to do when they were learning to type? 'NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD MEN TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR COUNTRY'. Well, start typing.

3. We can only hope that the dems grow a spine
and stand up against his nomination. but I don't have too much hope for that occurring.

5. Exactly!
Our Dems have played nice too long, this is one of the most important decisions they will make. I wish I had more faith in their leadership.

This is the time every Democratic representive needs to come together and block this nomination. If not, this country will not be recognizable in 5 years.

Look at what has happened in the last 5 years. This country can't take much more............
