James Kroeger: The Republican Nemesis
"Excerpt: The ultimate truth of political competition is that Swing Voters always choose a particular candidate or party because they fear the consequences of having the other candidate/party in office, the one they didn’t vote for...What Democrats need to understand clearly is that Swing Voters can be persuaded to fear either party. Right now, too many of them fear The Democrats more than they fear The Republicans. They will return to their identification with the Democratic Party only after they have been persuaded that it is The Republicans whom they ought to fear, not the Democrats. It is the Republicans who are not like them, who are simply looking for yet another opportunity to play them for fools."

"FWIW, If the Democrats truly understood the information in this James Kroeger editorial, I no doubt they would have taken both the White House and the Congress in 2004.

Democrats will most likely not win again until they do understand it..."

The Republican Nemesis

When historians look back on the current era in American politics it will likely stand out as the period when Republican cunning & marketing savvy completely dominated the political landscape. Obliging Democrats have thrown themselves into the fray with enthusiasm, armed with idealistic visions of civil “discourse”, only to be humbled repeatedly by their political masters. Republican strategists have been able to blend their astute grasp of marketing principles, human nature, & social psychology into a formula that delivers almost guaranteed success at the polls. While Democrats knock themselves out every election cycle trying to talk to Swing Voters about The Issues, Republicans have calmly focused their attention on winning The Image Campaign. Quite simply: Democrats lose because they don’t understand what moves their target audience.

The Issues might actually be important to many Swing Voters early on in a political campaign, but when both sides start to pick apart each other’s facts & interpretations, the typical Swing Voter quickly becomes confused. As the debate over The Issues drags on, Swing Voters realize that they don’t understand the details well enough to make an informed decision, so they end up relying on their impressions of the candidates. Republican strategists see this clearly. That is why they continuously try to create doubts in the minds of the Swing Voters about the character of the Democratic candidate. They know that it doesn’t really matter if they can’t find any real flaws in their Democratic opponents. Accusations, insinuations, & innuendo will work just fine. They hope to encourage voters to question the motivation and dependability of The Democrats. They try to create the perception that Democrats are “defective” in a disturbing way. By accusing, the Republicans suggest to Swing Voters that they are not . What was the non-existent “defect” in John Kerry’s character that Republicans alerted Swing Voters to this year? They claimed that he was an indecisive and shallow “flip-flopper.”

Republican strategists know they would rarely win if election results were always determined by a logical discussion of The Issues and nothing more (they know that most voters would benefit more from Democratic economic policies than from Republican policies). They know they must win the Image Campaign to have any chance of winning. That is why they are committed, now and forever, to negative campaigning. Republicans have never forgotten a key stratagem they perfected during the Reagan Era: DEMONIZING YOUR OPPONENTS WORKS. It works because Swing Voters are essentially “headline readers” & “sound byte nibblers.” When they see in the headlines that Candidate A accused Candidate B of having a certain personality defect, they tend to believe it. (Unless it is effectively answered.)

The most important reason why negative campaigning has worked so well for the Republicans is because their negative attacks on the Democrats create a positive impression of Republican candidates, who appear—in contrast—to be individuals who do not possess the defects that they have accused others of having. They define themselves by defining their Democratic opponents . On a visceral level, what the Republicans actually “stand for” in the minds of Swing Voters on election day is that they are not Democrats—those defective people who seem to have been born to ruin everything. It’s simple, really. By bashing Democrats, Republicans present themselves as the desirable alternative. The negative character attacks also provide the Republicans with one more benefit. They know that the media will give priority coverage to their personal attacks and that it will distract attention away from any of the "substance" blather that Democrats always like to talk about.

1. So true- we need to show the American people why they should FEAR
the GOP, for just showing our anger has far less impact on them. Truly there is all too much reason to fear the rabid dogs in power, especially the people who are not in the top 20% of the socio-economic distribution.

I saw an article on this point - to show them why they should FEAR the GOP instead of just expressing anger - and will try to find it to post here later.

Recommended. We need to find new ways to reach the American people and shock them into seeing the truth. Anger only goes so far. They have good reason to fear, and they should be shown why.

This is something really amazing. Finally, the discussion takes placein the public arena instead of just between smart observers.

3. You had a draft dodger calling a war hero unpatriotric last year
And Kerry just turned the other cheek, basically confirming this accusation to thousands of ignorant voters.

4. Dems, being more idealistic, are having a hard time believing
that nobody ever lost money underestimating the average American's intelligence, but it's true and the cynical republicans knew it long ago. Bottom-line is that this is all about image because the average American is narrow-minded, judgemental and paranoid. Complex analysis isn't comforting in times like these for the average American. Obviously, simple black and white answers to the complex realities facing the world's only superpower is what wins the proletariat's loyalty regardless of the likelihood of success. If the dems could distill down what they stand for, and present it as a MARKED contrast to what republican's stand for, contrary to what they claim, they'd start winning. Unless, it's too late because of electronic voting.

5. Contempt and scorn are powerful weapons
Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 05:41 PM by depakid
unfortunately, the Dems are loathe to use them- except at each other....

Hopward Dean bing a prime example of someone that they point their derision at.

8. You know? I don't agree. Well, to a point I agree. But:

the thing is, that bunch is better at us than revving up hate and fear.

More to the point, if that's all you have going for you, you're ultimately going to lose, even if it does land you in the power seat. That's what's happening to this bunch, comes down to it. They had nothing to offer except fear and destruction. And when the shit came down, it became painfully clear: it doesn't matter what they stand AGAINST, they didn't stand FOR anything except consolidating power. And look at the results.

I think we DO need to be way way less afraid of emotion, passion even. And that includes real anger...but it also needs to include hope.

Out of all the candidates last election, who made the biggest impression? Obama. He appeals to that hearts-and-guts place that so many of the Dems don't get...but he takes it in a very very different direction from what we've been seeing these last few years. And frankly, I think people are starved for that. We NEED that.

9. Revving up hate and fear?
From Kroeger's article:

Like it or not, the only way Democrats can win against the modern Republican Party is by defining them as a group that is defective and threatening. (When the Bad Guys do this, we can accurately describe it as "demonizing" your opponent.) Swing Voters will vote for the Democrat if they end up with an image of The Republican Politician that they find threatening. Unlike the Republicans, we Democrats do not need to fabricate any Republican character flaws out of thin air in order to "define" them effectively. We simply need to point out the truth. Our goal should be to define The Republican Politician as a shrewd, cunning, deceiving, manipulative, mean-spirited, Con-Artist who willfully and gleefully assassinates the character of any innocent victim who stands in his way.

when you paint the contrast with your opponent.

16. Gotta kinda disagree with you here
"if that's all you have going for you, you're ultimately going to lose"

They well may ultimately lose, but in doing so they stand a good chance of bringing the whole thing down on top of themselves...and us.

I wish Democratic candidates would learn to fire back when attacked. That was, in part, what Bill Clinton the 92 election. Carville and what's his name, the twirp who's now an ABC news pundit, were really good at that.

Unless I'm incredibly dense, it's not us Democrats that control the WH, Congress and the SCOTUS!

But who ya gonna believe, the bullshit that claims the opposite of reality or your own eyes and ears?

I prefer to believe the record and reality that is all laid out horribly clear in front of us all.

Obama? :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

14. Where there's smoke, there's fire
At least, that's the perception the rethugs have learned to count on. If they manage to get the demonization campaign against their oppoenet enough media air time -- and they always do -- most swing voters will believe there must be something to it.

I wish I could remember who came up with a quote that goes something like this:

If John Kerry was repeatedly accused of being a cannibal, most people would probably think that he at least bites people sometimes.

15. Dems to Blame for Brownie?
MUST SEE video!
"Democrats share blame for FEMA fallout for greenlighting Director Mike Brown. CNN's Ed Henry reports ..."

Watch the CNN video

Ed Henry's premise? That the Dems are to blame for "letting" Bush appoint Brownie. That's kind of like being charged with murder for being unarmed and unwilling to stop a lunatic with an AK47 from opening fire!

Maybe Jon Stewart was a little too quick with his pat-on-the-back for the MSM ...

I've read the Republican Nemesis - looks like now's the time to act on it!
