Tom Feran
Plain Dealer Columnist

The woman, not young, stood at a cash register in a local bookstore Wednesday and pointed at the front page of the newspaper she was buying.

"I'm worried about this," she said.

"Yeah, it's terrible," the clerk said, meaning everything in New Orleans.

"Well," the woman said, paying for her paper and books, "I don't feel so bad about not having money to send down there, because I know the healing salvation delivered through the power of prayer is stronger than any material donation."

The clerk, a young guy, blinked a few times, which kept his eyes from popping out.

1. Before I read the article I thought maybe the woman was
making a self-soothing justification, knowing her own poverty was keeping her from donating.

After reading it, I see it was merely a poverty of spirit.

2. That woman needs to read Matthew 6.
I'm not a believer, but it's good advice.

Unfortunately her head's so far up her ass she'd need to eat a bible to read it. As a bonus she's committing the sin of pride when she boasts of the power or her prayer and makes a spectacle of her piety. There were similar folk in the New Testament, I seem to recall the protagonist had noting good to say about them.

3. I'd love to know what books she was buying
We already know she was buying a newspaper, so that's money that could have been donated. The books might have been necessary (eg books for her child at school), but they could easily have not been. That she could say what she did while handing over money in a store shows how ignorant she is.
