Children's Author: Warn Kids About Liberals

Author of "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed" says New Orleans aftermath reveals crass opportunism of liberals, calls on parents to teach traditional values to kids.

The tragedy of Hurricane Katrina has exposed an ugly truth about liberals, and parents need to teach this to their kids, according to the author of a controversial upcoming children's book.

Katharine DeBrecht—the author of the soon-to-be-released "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed" (Kids Ahead, publisher) dismisses the notion that parents should not talk to their young kids about politics. If anything, she claims, the behavior of liberals following the flooding of New Orleans shows that parents with traditional values need to take a hands-on approach to making sure their kids aren't bombarded by left-wing messages.

"Liberals don't hesitate in pushing their extremist ideology," says DeBrecht, the mother of three and a co-captain of her state's Security Moms for Bush. "Their actions in the wake of the tragedy in New Orleans shows this only too well."

100. Why we should thank Liberals
based on the "Thank a Liberal" meme:

--Mommy, I'm so glad we can spend our weekends together.

Well, sweetheart, mommy has a 40 hour work week because of LIBERALS.

--Daddy, I enjoy going on hikes with you.

Well, son, we have a wonderful parks system because of LIBERALS.

--(Son to black female attorney, who's his mom): Mommy, when I grow up I want to be a lawyer like you.

Well, honey, thanks to the ruling in the University of Michigan case, you can, and you can do and be whatever you want because of LIBERALS.

etc, etc, etc.

12. Oh goody! Can't wait for my "liberal" kids to meet her Bushbot kids!
Well, this "extremist" liberal mom is pushing my extremist ideology on my kids and all their friends. In fact, immediately following the Hurricane, I went to my pachababy's kindergarten class and arranged with the teachers that instead of the kids going home and just having Mom and Dad "write a check" or give cash, lets talk to the kids about how the children in that area that got hit by the Hurricane lost everything and are very sad and scared. We talked about the weather and we arranged for all the kids to go home, get some "stuffies" (stuffed animals) that they had and wanted to share with the kids who lost everything. The kids have been so excited and we collected over 100 stuffies from 34 kids and today they colored with crayons the big box they are shipping in and wrote their names on little cards that will be attached with the kids photos.

Yeah, I guess those extremist views of mine are destroying these children at my daughter's school....Imagine, they are learning about caring, sharing (separating and giving up something to another), compassion and concern for others.

All I know is someday, my "liberally raised" by an extremist liberal daughter will run into Katherine DeBrecht's kids and I can only say that we will see which of the children have real "values"...

My youngest is now 38, but she and her brothers were raised by THIS liberal mom, and they are caring, compassionate, individuals. It sounds like your liberally raised daughter will be like my liberally raised kids.

I truly feel sorry for kids raised by the DeBrechts of this world, taught to look out for themselves, and to hell with anybody else. Your daughter's school is indeed lucky to have a mom like you, who gets involved, and teaches valuable lessons which will serve them the rest of their lives. Bravo for you!

18. reminds me of my children's book .......
"Honey, Republicans Shrunk The Government"

It's about a horrific hurricane that comes through and wipes out a great American city, meanwhile the President and Vice-President are on vacation and the government response to disaster is led by a former Judge of Arabian Horse Judges and because everything is so screwed up that lots of poor black people die. But, in the end they all get debit cards.... oops, scratch that. In the end, our protagonist watches Grampa drown to death in his nursing home, and his parents and brother get shot to death looking for food, but he gets flown away to Texas where Barbara Bush tells him how much better off he is now and Tom DeLay empathizes with the young boy's grief by asking him about how much fun he is having.

Next up is: "Grammy Wants To Die Because She Can't Pay For Her Medicine" and "Gay People Will Roast In Hell And Women Should Shut Up And Cook Dinner" Rick Santorum will be writing the foreward for me.

"Republican Creed:"
REPUBLICAN CREED

I DO NOT CHOOSE to be a common man.
It is my right to be uncommon.

IF I CAN SEEK OPPORTUNITY, not security,
I want to take the calculated risk to dream and to build,
to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for dole.

I PREFER THE CHALLENGES OF LIFE to guaranteed security.
The thrill of fulfillment, to the state of calm utopia.

I WILL NOT TRADE FREEDOM FOR BENEFICENCE,

Like to see how she or any of these South Carolina women would 'prefer' to change places with one of the victims of the hurricane. Would they see that as an 'opportunity'? Maybe they'd like to 'risk to dream' in abject poverty that your government wants to keep you in?

25. It reminds me of German Youth books from the 30s
Education is socialization of the masses. The books which I view on this were in the library and on the internet and were filled with phrases of extremist ideology and 'traditionalist values.
Except it was addressed to a religious group and not to a philosophical persuasion.

26. Crass opportunism of *liberals*?!
Since when are Halliburton, Blackwater and Kenyon "liberals"?? They're the only crass opportunists I see -- well, except for King Dumbass**, who can't seem to get enough photo ops (and French Quarter bar visits?) down there.

parents with traditional values need to take a hands-on approach to making sure their kids aren't bombarded by left-wing messages.

Oh, by the way, "traditional values" was the exact phrase used by New Orleans city councilshrew Jacqueline Clarkson (unbelievably, actress Patricia Clarkson's mom; apparently Patricia takes after Dad, who must've been quite the stud!) when she ran against an openly gay candidate in 1990: "Traditional values make the difference" (translation: you better not vote for the other guy 'cause he's a faggot :puke: )

29. The bane of conservative kid's books writers
is that kids instinctively hate doctrinaire, educational value books. The second thing is that those who are the the most imaginative and the most favored are all on our side. Not just neutral or humane but openly teaching by the force of story itself about the black hats and white hats in this world. Why? Because unless the kid is already a sociopath the RW has nothing appealing or of value to offer an innocent, ordinary human being. And they can't imagine why they turn most people off.

So it is not only the didactic fallacy that is obstinately upheld by traditional stupidity, but the "wholesome" ideas that want to reinforce themselves that run contrary to reader and market reality and reality in general. Few outside the RW persuasion are stupid enough to take the didactic approach. The "Left Behind" series acknowledges that subtle hyped and pumped up mega fantasy is a better vehicle for their propaganda approach, and there the pointed propaganda not the values is most naked under the fictional layer.

They still hate the Wizard of Oz series for its freedoms.

Liberals under the bed?

Ha! If it weren't for them libruls, the kid would probably be sharing that bed with eight or nine siblings. But only for a few hours -- just until the factory whistle summoned them all for another twelve hour shift in laissez-faire hell.

But I don't suppose this Katharine DeBrecht will have seen fit to mention any of that.

She was a whacko Reich winger back in the late 60s and early 70s. She once wrote a similar children's book. I stood in the same room while her husband suggested that the Jews during WWII shouldn't have been gassed, but should have been "humanely imprisoned".

You know the schoolteacher that "fell in love" with her 12 year old student? The one who spent time in jail and then married the then-grown "kid"? That was their daughter.

45. I'm Surprised she has the intelligence to write a book.
Besides, it's Nazism. It's teaching generalized hate.
When I was in Catholic grade school, they taught us that only Catholics would go to heaven. My mother pulled me out of the school in 2nd grade because she suspected child abuse, which was happening. I left the Catholic church in 1975 for good.

But, let me make it clear, I do not believe anything generally about all Catholics. It would be just as bad as what I was being taught by the nuns in that particular school for 1 1/2 years.

To this day my 87 year old mother thinks that the nuns in that school should have gone to prison.

How very low must we go!

It's bad that we throw around terms like Liberial and Conservative to without really understanding what they mean but to make a kiddy book about this shows the lack of any moral standard of the Author or the publisher. This is worse than any thing I have ever seen. Rather than devote a book to explaining the principals that she lives by or presenting them in a way that would be seen as "educational" she makes a book with a title that's just begging for people to be offened or worse excited. Do your kids and the world a favor, encurage them to be honest, truthful, accountable for thier actions & kind to each other and political lables will not get in the way of being a better person, you adults can learn that to !

let's see if it gets posted

that being a good person and a good member of a free society, that you MUST care for the least of us.

I am going to raise the best kids I can, and I guess it's working.

My 4 year old just started pre-school, and there where several kids crying and upset that they were being left at school.

My son, who never really showed this behavior before, went to them.
Patting their backs and telling them everything would be alright.

I have a feeling that this bitch would think that this was "suspicious behavior".

I will teach my children to be caring human being's, not some automaton that cares not for their fellow human beings.

120. Oh my dear Lord.
"Teach kids about the value of hard work and the threat that taxes pose to the American Dream"

WHAT THE HELL? WHAT THE HELL? WHAT THE HELL?

Taxes are bad?

That's it. I'm not gonna be happy until every state has a LUXURY TAX. Yep. Regular car, regular sales tax. Luxury car - regular sales tax plus luxury sales tax.

Some states do it - Pennsylvania does. I bought some stuff at a fabric store and there were three kinds of tax - no tax for some fabric, a standard tax for some ribbon, and a "luxury" tax for some ribbon I bought that had metallic thread in it. The lady explained that it was an old law, and it impressed upon me as some vestige of 16th century sumptuary laws.

for example:

http://www.pabulletin.com/secure/data/vol28/28-24/932.html
Generally, clothing is nontaxable except the following: (1) Formal day or evening apparel; (2) Articles made of real, imitation or synthetic fur where the fur is more than three times the value of the next most valuable component material; and (3) Sporting goods and clothing normally worn or used when engaged in sports. (See Category 23.)

Work clothes are not taxable, prom dresses are. Cool, eh?

(wow. where the heck did that rant come from?)

I really wonder how she defines what a liberal is to a child.

A liberal is someone who thinks the government should spend less money, or not spend money it doesn't have?

But mommy hasn't President Bush created the largest deficit in the history of the world?

A liberal wants bigger Government?

But mommy hasn't president Bush created the largest bureaucracy in the history of the world?

A liberal thinks the government should be involved in all aspects of people's lives, like what drugs they take or whether they should have babies...

Although obviously its a parents responsibility to answer questions etc about politics I seriously doubt most 4 to 8 year olds will be too involved or understand most of the concepts. I got interested in politics at an early age and even I wasn't into it with much gusto until I was in my teens. To be honest even then I really didn't have enough life experiences to truly understand and I certainly didn't get as much as I do know, being a father, doing a corporate job etc.

To me a book like this just spreads hate and bogus boogie man garbage like liberals take away half your money in taxes. LMAO.

How much of taxes are state, property taxes for schools, firefighters, local city services etc. Put onto that a large portions that go into military and another that goes to paying off the debt the republicans have run up and I think its safe to say liberals aren't the ones stealing all of your piggie bank money. Hey how about that nice SALES TAX so a rich man doesn't have to pay to build his own stadium that HE will make the money on?

Teaching hate only leads to practicing hate....

Help, Mom! There are Nazis on my bookshelf! The problem with books like these, is that you've got women with suspect rationalization skills attempting to mold the minds of America's youth in their own image. In fact, in an interview she did for this book(9/13/05), she said children shouldn't be taught about politics, yet here she is writing a children's book trying to shape children's political ideals. This is truly the curse of America as free speech is morphed into hate speech. I say buy the book, and don't forget to take it your weekly book burning.

He just turned six and still cannot grasp why people are violent with each other. He thinks that war is the most bizarre notion he's ever heard of. His playmates are of every color and ethnicity. I'm currently trying to explain to him the history of slavery in this country and he is absolutely floored and appalled by the very idea that people with dark skin would ever being considered "less" in any way. He adores animals and revels in nature; can't abide polluters. He worries about kids who don't have what he has.

Yeah, he's a dangerous liberal extremist, all right! My husband and I work very hard at not telling him how to think -- we present all sides of an issue, because we don't want a liberal dittohead, we want him to think for himself.

Sure, it's true that kids can be selfish, but it's very easy (from my experience) to foster their altruistic side. They have to be TAUGHT to hate like a conservative.

So no thanks -- I refuse to teach my compassionate, tolerant, kind, loving, anti-war son how to HATE. Thanks anyway. Actually, I'm hoping that your kid, the hater, will learn from my son.

97. This is not news - it's a press release, presumably from the publishers
or the author herself, on a 'free press release' website. She was caught on Free Republic last year trying to publicise her book. Are we going to treat her self-publicity as news, when Free Republic can see through it? Surely not.

105. Very sad...and scary....
There is a very militant republican I debate with on a local board. He actually told me one time that he pitied my infant child because it would be raised by liberals and therefore had no chance. Now, normally I have pretty thick skin and just brush off stupid attacks and do my best to stay on point....but that was too far. I just told him he had gone too far and that we were done....I would not have anything else to say to him.

After that everyone came out of the woodwork and pounced on him. He squirmed and wriggled and acted like he was shocked that people took it "the wrong way". But to his credit he came back and apologized. He still thinks I'm a commie pinko granola-crunchin' birkenstock-wearin' incense-burnin' liberal....but at least he said he was sorry.

110. Presumably for the reasons I gave in post #97
because it moved shortly after I posted them. *Duh*, as they say. ;-)

Seriously, it's not news that there's someone out there that hates liberals. If you treat it as news (for instance, getting it to turn up in people's DU RSS feed), you're just giving them the free publicity they want. If it were a respectable-looking book, maybe we should cut her some slack, but it's not. The way she tried to publicise it on Free Republic last year (it seems to have had a private printing first) was to say "All the liberal web sites are up in arms about this - maybe there's something in it". Don't make her look important.

Listened for less than a minute at which point I had arrived at my destination. In that little time I could tell she was quite a nutbag.

when you are both ignorant AND paranoid.

This woman is pathetic. "Extremist ideology"? She knows a great deal about that...just from looking in the mirror every morning.

Don't let them be what they want to be -- they might be gay, or liberal, or both!

God I feel sorry for kids with Bush-Bot parents. What a horrible upbringing. More of an indocrination than an upbringing.

127. Just what action is she speaking of? The demand to get the drowning
starved, sick, dehydrated and dying out of New Orleans? The cry for water? The disgust at the lack of response? All the attempts to save people that were thwarted by FEMA? He own president said he took responsibility for the disaster's aftermath. I feel sorry for her children, hateful bitch.

Here's a very un-liberal thing to say...

FUCK YOU, you ignorant, hate-mongering, white-bread, selfish, nation-dividing, bigoted, egotistical, maniacal, war-loving but won't send your own kids, people-hating, reich-wing, hypocritical, false prophet-loving, never needed anything in your life, god-damned bitch. FUCK YOU.

FUCK YOU.

Fuck you.

May you one day find yourself on your roof - in the summertime, with no food, no water - waiting for George Bush.

Fuck you...

A few minutes with Jon Stewart grilling her ass should take care of it quite nicely....

139. Here's a message for her (and, for any Freepers/lurkers, as well)
"...(P)arents with traditional values need to take a hands-on approach to making sure their kids aren't bombarded by left-wing messages."

Here's my message:

Arming the Left: Is the time now? --by Charles Southwell

I hope you didn't open this page to read what we already know: that this is the most rightwing government we have ever had in the US, even far right of Bush I, that our rights are being eroded daily, and that our democratic process is all but gone, if it isn't already gone.

I hope you came here to read about tactics for action that will finally have some consequence. I hope you agree that our protests, petitions, letters, and on and on, have been utterly ignored. The fascistas that run our country laugh at us. They believe they can do anything and that we haven't got the guts to revolt, but only to wage a war of words. I have seen the Bush cavalcades, as they drive away, his aids sneering and jeering and laughing and mocking our protests. They think we are a JOKE. Tens of millions of Americans protested the war, but because we posed no REAL THREAT to their power, we were UTTERLY IGNORED.

As long as we pose no REAL threat to the powers-that-be, to what is shaping up into a dictatorship, we will continue to be ignored. Right now, we are ignored because we present no organized power to fight this onslaught of anti-democratic, totalitarian government that we are up against.

Helping, caring, sharing, giving??? Remember, the pharisees indicted Christ as a radical, used that as a central argument to try to get the Romans to kill him.
