Being Poor
This one brought tears to my eyes...It should be inscribed on every Republican's inner eyelid...

Being poor is knowing exactly how much everything costs.

Being poor is getting angry at your kids for asking for all the crap they see on TV.

Being poor is having to keep buying $800 cars because they're what you can afford, and then having the cars break down on you, because there's not an $800 car in America that's worth a damn.

Being poor is hoping the toothache goes away.

Being poor is knowing your kid goes to friends' houses but never has friends over to yours.

Being poor is going to the restroom before you get in the school lunch line so your friends will be ahead of you and won't hear you say "I get free lunch" when you get to the cashier.

Being poor is living next to the freeway.

Being poor is wondering whether your well-off sibling is lying when he says he doesn't mind when you ask for help.

Being poor is off-brand toys.

Being poor is a heater in only one room of the house.

5. Wow, I can relate to about 90% of that
I just wish people who have more could even comprehend what any of that feels like.

6. Being Poor Assumes You are Lazy
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 03:15 PM by mntleo2
Most people of poverty are on the move every spare moment trying to get the neccessities met (our "vacation" time usually). From rushing to the food bank before it closes after you get off work, filling out reams of papers and hoping you answered the questions the right way, to begging some poker faced bureaucrat for rental assistance, food for your kids, or childcare assistance so you can go and face your McJob's psycho boss, being poor means it is automatically assumed you are lazy....

My 2 cents...

Cat In Seattle <----35 years+ working McJobs, PTA secretery, digital divide volunteer, activist for low income people and social justice, past church steward, recent college graduate, published poet, and now a VISTA volunteer (with really nice bosses now), as well as a low income single mom ~ not neccessarily in that order!

Edited for spelling
