It's too late for Bush to find a bullhorn moment in Gulf Coast (Dowd)
<snip> How many places will be in shambles by the time the Bush crew leaves office?

Given that the Bush team has dealt with both gulf crises, Iraq and Katrina, with the same deadly mixture of arrogance and incompetence, and a refusal to face reality, it's frightening to think how it will handle the most demanding act of government domestic investment since the New Deal. <snip>

The aides were scared to tell the isolated president that he should cut short his vacation by a couple of days, Newsweek said, because he can be "cold and snappish in private."

Mike Allen wrote in Time about one "youngish aide" who was so terrified about telling Bush he was wrong about something during the first term, that he went to the bathroom afterward and "had dry heaves." <snip>

1. Yes, but I see many blowhard moments in his future
Seriously, I hope it is too late for him to redeem himself. Every time I see him on the ropes he pulls a mysterious "ropadope," wiggling his way out. I think he is deep doodoo, with the trifecta of gas prices, Iraq, and Katrina, none of which promises to get better any time soon.

2. Excellent article.
Again, the fact that no one in the White House was taking a pulse on society until it was too late is frightening. Maureen knows how to sum it up .
