Buying Freedom
A strong economy depends on a strong sense of materialism
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina the human casualty toll is expected to hit 10,000, and the economic losses will number in the tens of billions. So more than ever, we need to rely on our culture of greed and materialism to strengthen the one thing we’ve shown to value more than human life: our economy.
It is no secret that our economy (along with cut-throat foreign policy tactics) makes a lot of the poor and teed-off countries hateful/envious of us. But truth be told, our economy is only as strong as the belief we, as American consumers, have in it. We put that belief into action every time we shop and spend money.
At its best, our economy is applied theory, and at its worst it is just smoke and mirrors. Buying things that are not necessities is a vote of confidence in our way of life. <snip>
