Hurricanes' aftermath whips up new deal for president

WASHINGTON — Back-to-back hurricanes have reshaped the geography of the Gulf Coast and the contours of George W. Bush's presidency.

Bush was elected in 2000 as a "compassionate conservative" who promised a "humble" foreign policy. After the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001, he made fighting terrorism his main mission, launching wars in Afghanistan and then Iraq.

Now, in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita — to the consternation of many in his Republican base — he is outlining one of the most ambitious domestic goals of any modern president. It is akin to FDR's New Deal, a response to the Depression, and the anti-poverty projects of LBJ's Great Society.

Call him Franklin Delano Bush?

FDR took a country IN depresssion and brought it OUT, not the other way around.

For FDR, the only thing we had to fear was fear itself. For Bush, the only thing we had was fear.

FDR hired millions. Bush hires a few corporations and suspends Davis Bacon.

4. I agree that equating Bush with anything Roosevelt did is like

comparing a one cell amoeba to Einstein. Completely two different life forms.

But...the Bush family hates, abhors, detests, loathes anything to do with FDR, his programs, his administration, etc. This is absolutely the lowest, meanest thing you could ever say about any Bushie. Preston Bush made a fortune off of Hitler and FDR just didn't understand the concept of making a buck any way you can, using anyone you can, at the determent of soldiers, Jews, a country or democracy. It was all about money with no distractions like morals, ethics or what is right and good. They could not be further from FDR. We all know Bushie isn't giving away the Treasury for high moral reasons, he is just doing what his family has always done - trying to buy his way out of a mess. His grandson is just working the family business. No matter what the reason for equating the two - it is a definite slam to the Bushies and repugs and will really piss them off.
