Many Soldiers, Same Letter
Newspapers Around US Get Identical Missives from Iraq
by Ledyard King, Gannett News Service

WASHINGTON -- Letters from hometown soldiers describing their successes rebuilding Iraq have been appearing in newspapers across the country as U.S. public opinion on the mission sours.

And all the letters are the same.

Many Soldiers, Same Letter

1. What gets me
is the fact that the soldiers questioned say they agree with the points in this letter. If that is so, why would anyone make multiple copies of the same letter? Why not just order the soldiers to write letters home, or give them time to write letters home? Could it be because, although the soldiers interviewed agreed with the letter's contents, many others would not?

2. Way back when...

I was in basic training, we were given letters to "write" home telling the family how wonderful the Army was and how much fun Basic was. And you did not dare to refuse to send them.

Partly, it was the usual military control, but it was also due to a fair amount of illiteracy.

They want the message out, but don't trust the troops to write the right message.

3. A more intresting story
would now be ...How many troops in the 503rd refused to participate in this obvious kiss ass gesture. Any fair and balanced news source who fell for and printed this BS should be on it heavy.
