ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AFP) - The Americas summit in Argentina made "real progress" toward expanded trade, despite its failure to reach a unified stance on creation of a regional free trade area, US national security adviser Stephen Hadley told reporters.
"We went from a summit which was supposed to bury FTAA to a summit in which all 34 countries actually talk in terms of enhanced trade ... recognizing there are challenges," Hadley said as
President George W. Bush flew from Argentina to Brazil. "I would say that is some real progress."
The summit in the Argentine resort town of Mar del Plata ended Saturday without reaching a compromise on a proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas that is supposed to eliminate tariffs and other trade barriers from Alaska to Argentina.
A senior US administration official acknowledged that a US-led drive, followed by 28 other countries, for resuming formal talks on the free trade area next year ran into stiff opposition from five nations -- Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela......
