Bush's latest snub

President George W. Bush needs all the friends he can get to extricate himself from his problems in Iraq. He needs money from other nations for Iraqi reconstruction as well as soldiers to lighten the burden on his own troops.

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien has already pledged $350 million to help with reconstruction, and while Canada hasn't committed troops to Iraq, it is making an indirect contribution to Bush's efforts by taking on responsibility for maintaining order in Afghanistan.

Also, Canada has pledged $350 million for relief efforts in Afghanistan.

Yet, despite these efforts, Bush has refused Chrétien's request for a one-on-one meeting during this week's APEC summit in Bangkok.

I am going to email the Prime Minister's office and apologize for our president's pathetic, embarrassing behavior. Or maybe I should say "behaviour."

I am an American. Today's Toronto Star had an editorial about President Bush's refusal to meet privately with Prime Minister Chrétien at the APEC summit.

I would like to apologize for my President's embarrassing, petulant behavior. I would like Canadians to know that many of us value our friendship with Canada and hope for it to continue long into the future.

I would also ask Canadians not to judge America by President Bush. There are many millions of us who feel he is doing a terrible job for America and for the world. We don't like him any more than you do.

To every Canadian and European I've met, but I can't becuse I'm not Dog Nuts, foam at the mouth, thump the Bible or feed an entertiner synthetic heroin and disguise it as news.

Heck, we can't even explain what happened to our Country in a rational manner more often than not.

All I ask is to bear with us until 2004. If Dimbo is dethroned, the World gains and if not, then the best and brightest of the US will either emigrate or start another Civil War.

7. Here's the e-mail I just sent.

Mr. Prime Minister, as a citizen of the United States, I would like to apologize for the shameful and shameless behavior of my, so-called, President. Not only is his boorish behavior not supported by a majority of US citizens, his general attitude towards your great nation is likewise abhorred. Clear-headed citizens of the United States appreciate your nation and your people and feel honored and grateful at your stauch friendship and support for our country (even when we haven't always deserved it). Canada is seen, here, as a beacon of light and hope in the world; it is a model we aspire to on our better days.

Please do not view this President as being representative of the United States - most of us don't. Again, please accept this one citizen's apology and know that we are doing everything within our power to make sure that next November the new President's first act will be a request to visit Canada.

When Bush snubs him, he gets to look like Pierre Trudeau weathering insults from Richard Nixon.

In his three terms in office, Jean Chretien has gone back on almost all of his campaign promises, assaulted a protestor on camera (let's see the Shrub try *that*!), shown blatant favoritism in diverting money to his own parliamentary riding, and bullied members of his own caucus into submission when they quietly suggested he retire. He probably wouldn't even be PM right now if the right-wingers didn't pick such rotten candidates.

Chretien isn't nearly as bad as Bush, but he's no saint, either. Being compared to one of the country's most popular PMs ever will do his image wonders on his way out.
