Governor candidates reach out via religion
LISA CORNWELL
Associated Press

CINCINNATI - The voting clout of conservative Christians credited with helping swing crucial states such as Ohio to President Bush two years ago hasn't been lost on the candidates of 2006.

Particularly in the South and in swing states, candidates for governor and other races are paying attention to conservative and moderate faith-value voters with visits to churches and meetings with preachers.

They are talking about their faith in speeches and identifying values such as the sanctity of marriage as part of a campaign platform. They quote from the Bible. A candidate for Ohio governor carries his Bible to campaign events.

Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who is seeking re-election, spoke to hundreds of pastors at a meeting of the Texas Restoration Project, which hopes to elect candidates who reflect conservative Christian views. He promoted the idea of spiritual values in the public square and told the pastors that it was ridiculous for people to say morality can't be legislated.

"I say you can't not legislate morality," he said, according to a transcript provided to The Associated Press by his campaign.

1. Scary crew. To this bunch, helping the poor, sick is not a moral issue
Rick Perry, Ken Blackwell, Roy Moore. Demagogues, each and every one of them. Aside: We know how tough it is in Texas and Alabama, but how can Ohio even consider the crook Blackwell?

3. Gag
It is all so phony. I don't understand why the intellectually challenged believe the hypocrites. It is such an empty argument and has no business in government. I find it disgusting.

5. The irony of this of course (other than the deliberate theft of
legitimate votes) is that Kerry is much more sincerely religious than W. Just read that wonderful piece on Gore and one thing that struck me was that Gore is for policy-driven campaigns, not media minutes and half-minutes (also known as sound bites.)
