Scientists Focus on Warming Disasters
http://www.forbes.com/work/feeds/ap/2006/04/02/ap2640194.html

A man stands on a railroad track as a train rumbles closer.

"Global warming?" he says. "Some say irreversible consequences are 30 years away. Thirty years. That won't affect me."

He steps off the tracks - just in time. But behind him is a little blonde-haired girl left in front of the roaring train.

The screen goes black. A message appears: "There's still time."

It's just an ad, part of a campaign from the advocacy group Environmental Defense, which hopes to convince Americans they can do something about global warming, that there's still time.

more

I feel the urgency of that train. It seems that a 3 year education program is really slow.

1. A day is too slow. It's a global emergency right now. WTF?
Why can't the idiots who run the world realize this.

A 20 foot increase in sea level by 2100, and it could be much worse, should alert all the globe to the severity of the problem. It won't all happen in 2100, it's called incremental increases...everywhere. That's just part of the story, here's more:

1) The Russian tundra is frozen. When global warming unfreezes it, we'll have a whole bunch more CO2 in the atmosphere. I don't know if that's factored into the 20 foot rise. Here's what 20 feed does:

Bye bye Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, and New York City!!!! and London!!!! and the whole damn Netherlands (no dikes will work against this).

Where the Hell are the Dutch on this? Are they run by the delusional now. Oops, forgot, "Royal Dutch Shell"...sorry, mind in off position.

2) There is a belt of pollution in the atmosphere that accounts for lower levels of sunlight on earth, ergo less heat, less warming. If we turn off pollution tomorrow, guess what, the belt of filth is no more and it gets hotter all of a sudden. Now what do we do with that little factoid?

Sweet, nice work. We produce 8 times the pollution that would be expected...3% of the population, 25% of the pollution. Get the message, the world is at the crisis point. We will be luck if it's not really too late.

2. Your # 1. refers to methane hydrates
and in that connection this is well worth reading : http://marine.usgs.gov/fact-sheets/gas-hydrates/title.html

I have come across similar articles which refer to deposits off the coast of NC and the risk of destabilising the continental shelf if mining were to proceed. I have a particularly selfish attitude to this as I have a good friend in Edenton NC who is a jazz tuba player - very important people those !

With ref. to your point 2 : further temperature rise would likely accelerate polar melting and thus further sea rise. There is however a paradox. As the land area diminishes with it's associated ability to store heat so temperatures would fall. It is envisaged that this could lead to the next ice age.

3. Please stick around and post more on DU. This is THE issue.
You really know this stuff. It's so imperative that we take on the task of preserving our environment so we can stay alive. This issue will take off and there's a need for quick, effective education.

Let me know when you post by send me a PM and I'll be there.

6. me too. I am quite concerned
and know that a three year education program is peeing against the wind. We need to be getting the message out now. Earth Day is April 22nd. Remember Earth Day? April 26th is the 20th anniversary of Chernobyl too. Education and appropriate immediate action is necessary.
Thanks for posting. I'll be looking for more conversation
