BBC: How the US 'lost' Latin America
Analysis: How the US 'lost' Latin America
As the BBC begins a special series on Latin America, Newsnight presenter Gavin Esler gives his view on the region's leftward trend and its changing relationship with the US.

There is trouble ahead for Uncle Sam in his own backyard. Big trouble.

It is one of the most important and yet largely untold stories of our world in 2006. George W Bush has lost Latin America.

While the Bush administration has been fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, relations between the United States and the countries of Latin America have become a festering sore - the worst for years.

Virtually anyone paying attention to events in Venezuela and Nicaragua in the north to Peru and Bolivia further south, plus in different ways Mexico, Argentina and Brazil, comes to the same conclusion: there is a wave of profound anti-American feeling stretching from the Texas border to the Antarctic.

And almost everyone believes it will get worse.

3. He's got it wrong

The fact is that there is a "wave of profound anti-American feeling" stretching from any border of the US around the globe to the other. We are the most dangerous "rogue state" in the world today.

4. Most still don't get it, people in LatAm. are not voting against the USA
They are voting against corrupt politicians who have worked hard to make themselves and their friends richer, while forgetting about those who elected them. Sure, they are US allies for the most part, but that's just one characteristic of these governments: the main issue is old politics against new politics. Chávez, Lula, Vasquez, Morales, Bachelet represent new politics...

Believe it or not, people on Latin America don't base their vote on whether they love or hate the USA, they are voting for their OWN progress.

5. This doesn't have to be trouble for us--it can be an opportunity
If Dems get in, we have to get them to dump the neoliberalism and business based military interventions.

Frankly, the only problem I have Chavez is that he can't be president of the United States. He's head and shoulders above nearly all Democrats, and of course the corporat lackey GOP.

7. Chavez speaks the truth
"The imperialist, genocidal, fascist attitude of the US president has no limits," Mr Chavez says. "I think Hitler would be like a suckling baby next to George W Bush."

9. Corporate America Has Put US on a Vegan-News Diet
no red meat, no meat of any kind, no proteins, no iron, no nutritional content whatsoever. Starch and fat and serious lacks of essential amino acids for strong democracy.

Losing control over the colonies is a very bad sign.

11. You have more control over Canada than at any other time in history.
If it's any consolation.

Thanks to NAFTA, and a Canadian economic and political elite that shows a complete unwillingness to defend their country's sovereignty - unlike the elite of any other developed country on earth.

12. The ironic thing about this is -
while they decided to 'sacrifice' Latin America in order to focus on the Middle East (and light, sweet crude), they will ultimately lose the Middle East as well.

They have not succeeded in either Iraq or Afghanistan. In fact, that loss has compounded the losses with all the other colonies. Look at Pakistan - a powderkeg ready to blow. Just like all the rest of them.

Check mate, Dick & Don.
