THE NATION
Now Powell Tells Us
Robert Scheer is editor of TruthDig, where this essay originally was published.

The President played the scoundrel--even the best of his minions went along with the lies--and when a former ambassador dared to tell the truth, the White House initiated what Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald calls "a plan to discredit, punish or seek revenge against Mr. Wilson." That is the important story line.

If not for the whistleblower, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, President Bush's falsehoods about the Iraq nuclear threat likely would never have been exposed.

On Monday, former Secretary of State Colin Powell told me that he and his department's top experts never believed that Iraq posed an imminent nuclear threat, but that the President followed the misleading advice of Vice President Dick Cheney and the CIA in making the claim. Now he tells us.

Sorry, Colin. There's no restoring your wrecked rep now. You should have envisioned all this before you walked into the U.N. with all those silly diagrams. It's going to be on your conscience for the rest of your life, no matter how you try to escape it.
And Sandra Day O'Connor, the same applies to you, for a different but equally tragic event.

4. I couldn't have said it better myself.
Cowardly Colin could have, should have, spoken up. Even now he is protecting Bush.

3. There were actually a couple reports...
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 01:01 PM by skypilot
...about Powell seeing the "intelligence" that the administration wanted him to present to the Security Council and throwing it across the room shouting, "This is bullshit!!" It was one of those stories that just sunk like a stone. Of course, the idiot went before the SC with the "bullshit" anyway.

5. What Powell has done is treasonous to the people of the United States.
He kept his mouth shut, and serviced George Bush instead of fulfilling is obligation and duty to the Constitution.

He is a traitor, plain and simple. Shame on him.

6. The honorable thing to do would have been to resign and then
speak out to try and prevent an unnecessary and dishonorable war. But Colon isn't an honorable man, he's a Republican. So he stayed on and allowed over 2,300 Americans to be killed and over 17,000 to be injured, dismembered, brain damaged and maimed in every way imaginable. He kept his silence like a good soldier and innocent Iraqi's have paid a bloody price. His loyalty to the President and GOP only cost the tax payers of this country half a trillion dollars and counting.
