2. And it isn't news.
Saying, "we still don't know, we still don't know..." isn't informing the public of anything useful at all.

Furthermore, how many thousands have gone missing since Natalie did but get no mention at all?

I'm sorry for the Holloways, but I'm disgusted with the press for picking these pet stories and gnawing at them every day.

4. I am sorry for the family, but this is a personal tragedy
For a few individuals.

Meantime the country is suffering through HUGE national tragedies (Iraq, wire tapping, CIA Leak, the list goes on and on) and it is a struggle to get the MSM to spend more than a few minutes on these complex problems.

10. What I find so disheartening
is to witness the amount of time and energy spent dissecting this personal tragedy (now add to it the Duke lacrosse story, another "who cares" adventure) that means nothing in terms of what's going on in the whole world, and to realize - sadly - that far too many people care a whole lot more about a lost high school graduate than thousands and thousands of dead Iraqis and American soldiers and Marines.

I honestly believe we've lost our way, and that's why the Democrats aren't producing any kind of viable leader or plan. I think we've all gone stupid and flabby.

Hope springs eternal, but I don't know how many more springs I've got in these old legs.

6. I'll be cruel. I'm sick of it and the racist overtones. Everyone in the
MSM cares about white girls but no one cares for men and women of colour in distress.

This makeup bullshit they are trying to do with these one off people of colour in distress cases is pissin me off.

7. Once again, we must ask ourselves, what is it we're not hearing
while there is round-the-clock coverage of Natalee and the Duke Lacrosse Team? I don't have cable, but was on a business trip last week and could not believe the cable news channels. What crap!!!! My gawd, how do people stand it? It's drivel!

8. Remember the Chandra Levy -- Gary Condit situation?
In the news business, small "personality" news can drive out bigger but amorphous news.

Levy and Condit went on and on and on and on -- UNTIL there was a VERY large story that couldn't be denied.

That was on September 11, 2001.

9. There's always a "sexy story" out there to titillate the masses ...
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 08:20 PM by ShortnFiery
Best thing those of us who are disgusted by such distractions can do ---> is NOT to feed the media beasties by keeping up with the story. Last update I couldn't help but hear is when the family from Alabama said they wanted all members of their state to boycott Aruba, i.e., and hopefully vice versa. :P

11. This bullshit story is being pushed
by Holloway's mother who evidently saw how well it worked for Lacy Petersons mother. Once harpies like Nancy Grace, Greta von Facelift and Rita Foghorn got hold of it Scott Peterson didn't need a trial he'd already been tried convicted sentenced and hung by the media. They will feel no shame for blaming the wrong kid for a year, but it will be interesting to see if they can muster up the same level of indigantion for the rich white Duke lacrosse players who have been accused of raping a black stripper.

disgraceful. I don't know why her parents go along with this.

Corporate propaganda networks are in the sewer.

7 minutes of news and 53 minutes of entertainment, minus advertisements.

Those poor pitiful propagandists are ghouls.

14. But today, there IS news. Unlike all the other "still nothing" days
where her case STILL led the news.

I would allow today's news but eliminate the ninety percent of "news" that was just speculation.

15. I agree
While I am sorry for the Holloways, there is so much that is impacting numerous people.

Wages are stagnant, the middle class is disappearing, and people are losing their jobs and their homes.
Few can afford health care.
Outsourcing of jobs.
There are dead bodies STILL being found after Katrina.
The survivors of Katrina are not getting the assistance they need.
There is corruption on the highest levels which needs to be addressed.
The pitfalls of electronic voting needs to be given top priority.
Our Constitution is being dismantled piece by piece.

These are just SOME of the stories I would like to see covered on the news.

16. It was on the radio today.
I don't have cable, and I rarely watch television. I know about this story from DU.

It was mentioned on the radio this morning while I was waiting for the weather report. I have a feeling she went missing a year ago.

Illegal wiretapping is an enormous story. It wasn't mentioned.

20. 1) Blood, sex, guts & cannibalism sell.
2) Aruba, lacrosse, runaway brides, etc. divert attention from staggering deficit, dead soldiers, chaos/quagmire in Iraq, corruption/collusion (Halliburton), bodies still being discovered in New Orleans attics as a new hurricane season is about to start, potential nuclear attacks on Iran, Rendition/Abu Ghraib/Gitmo, a president who spits on the Constitution, etc etc etc.

21. Look at the facts...
The longer this goes on, the longer reporters get to hang out in Aruba on the company dime.

I agree, I am sick of it. I rarely watch cable news, but it seems like there is always something on about this case when I do.

22. you're not being cruel
There are thousands of people who are murdered every year, and the fact that a white girl from Alabama disappears while on a white girl vacation in Aruba doesn't merit non-stop, breathless news reports on an hourly basis at the expense of honest, up-front coverage of a lying government. It's a shame the poor girl was murdered, but there have been more than 100,000 Iraquis murdered since the beginning of our war ON Iraq.
