Seymour Hersh: BuzzFlash "Wing's of Justice Award" Winner
Seymour "Sy" Hersh May Have Prevented WWW III. He is This Week BuzzFlash "Wing's of Justice Award" Winner

For a short time, BuzzFlash decided it wouldn't consider journalists as nominees for the weekly BuzzFlash "Wings of Justice Award. " The thinking was that people who get paid to report the truth shouldn't be honored for doing what is a professional benchmark. Then, we came to our senses. After nearly six years of publication, BuzzFlash knows quite well that the number of so-called journalists who report the truth can be counted on the fingers of one hand -- and that's after it's been put through a buzzsaw. So, we've honored a few, based on reader submissions, including Helen Thomas, Molly Ivins, and Bill Moyers.

And now it's time for the last of the Vietnam-era war investigative reporters -- in an age almost completely devoid of even the concept of investigative journalism -- Seymour "Sy" Hersh to have his name put on the honor roll. Hersh is a reporter who -- when the Busheviks are facing a virtual mutiny from the military -- may have single-handedly prevented WWW III by revealing White House plans to extensively drop nuclear bombs on Iran. Sure the guy who runs Iran is a scary nudnik, but precipitating Armageddon is not much of a solution.

Writing for the New Yorker, Hersh is known as a meticulous fact checker and a guy with an incredible list of inside sources. When we called him a couple of years ago for an interview, he was concerned about keeping a low profile and not appearing to rub sand in the face of all the reporters who weren't doing their jobs. Not that anyone has ever accused Hersh of being a shrinking violet, but, at that time, he wanted his work to be the centerpiece of attention, not himself.

Things have changed, however. Now, he sees the Bush White House is a threat to the entire world. He has the same sort of sources represented by the mutinous former generals, only in the intelligence community. Hersh knows that the people who know what they are doing are convinced that the Bush White House has no idea what it is doing -- and is bound to set off an international explosion. "Sy" Hersh is now making the rounds, ringing a four-alarm warning as a result. He more than deserves this week's BuzzFlash "Wings of Justice Award."
