Eight billion mysteries stump the little man in the big white house
I'm wondering. Help me wonder. Either Georgie Bush is the minor, depressing, witless ferret I think he is, or I am. It has to be one or the other. If things don't start looking up pretty soon internationally, I'm going to be pretty sure which.

As best as I can tell, what the Maximum Cipher lacks, among an inexhaustible list of other things, is a hop toad's understanding of how people work. Here we have the explanation of just about everything he does. He's dealing with a world full of people, but has no idea what people are. He probably couldn't recognize one. So he doesn't take their predictable behavior into account.

Think about it. When he went braying into Iraq, he thought people would roll over, throw flowers, and have a democratic revolution. This would start a domino effect that would make all the other Muslim countries want to be democracies, too. They would climb over each other to be democracies. They would love us because democracies love each other. He just knew it.

This makes perfect sense if you have no flipping idea how human beings work.

1. it's not that he doesn't understand people. it's that they are irrelevant
he thinks the world exists for the benefit of his chummy circle of privileged people. the rest of us are servants, slaves, serfs, rats, vermin, cannon fodder, whatever. "people" exist to serve the privileged in whatever capacity the privilege think serves their own interests best.

the only reason he pays lip service to people is because he can't just do away with stupid laws about voting and crap like that. it's hard work keeping people under control!

The article makes a very good point, in very basic terms. Well worth a read.

Edit to add additional text from article noted above:

"Remember when Baffled Boy wanted all the Muslim countries to have elections and be democracies? And was all surprised when it worked, and he got Hamas and all? Let's ponder this. The analysis will be difficult, but I have faith in my readers.

What happens when you have elections in a country in which most of the people hate you? We'll do this by multiple choice, to give everyone an even chance. Answer: they elect a government that:

(a) loves you, loves Israel, and wants desperately to do everything you tell it to, or

(b) hates your guts"

5. Excellent addition to.....
the list of "Bush is an Idiot" editorials.

"Of course, if you have read any history, which Bush hasn't, you will have noticed that people do not like being occupied by force. They don't like having their cities bombed. It galls them. It can, under certain circumstances (such as any circumstances) make them hostile.

Nowadays our Keystone president, ever impervious to reason, experience, or the obvious, leers at Iran like a deviate in a nudie bar. (He probably wears a raincoat when thinking about policy.) He figures that the Iranians too want to be attacked in the name of unasked-for virtue.

It didn't work in Iraq, or in Afghanistan, so it will work in Iran."

7. I loved these bits:
Of course, if you have read any history, which Bush hasn't, you will have noticed that people do not like being occupied by force. They don't like having their cities bombed. It galls them. It can, under certain circumstances (such as any circumstances) make them hostile.

If you think in terms of abstractions too simple for Reader's Digest, you might reflect as follows: "Democracy good. Iraqi people, love'm democracy, so love'm us. Urrrg." Then you might be real surprised when their gratitude was exiguous after you remorselessly wrecked their cities, killed their army (which consisted of other people's husbands, brothers, and sons: Ever think of that?), groped their women when you didn't have time to rape them, and left them without water and electricity.

I'm not saying the Iraqis ought to dislike these things, only that pretty reliably they will dislike them. The Afghans, too. It's how people are. Ungrateful.

...............Let us suppose that you don't like Bush. If the Chinese bombed your home, and killed your sister, would that make you join the Chinese and want a puppet government?

It is not how people work.

20. Anyone who has been to Iraq lately, knows of the terrifyingly fast
descent planes now have to make to avoid being
shot down by anti-aircraft fire while landing.

From the airport, the prefered method of travel to "the Zone"
is by helicopter, as the roads are still so dangerous.

As you are suggesting people just jump on a plane and go
spend a year in Iraq, a thing no sane person who knows
the situation would ever recommend in a country turning to
civil war, I can only assume your post is all a pile of poo.

16. but being a war prez-ee-dent is so much fun!
You get to blow things up (besides frogs).

Before he was ever elected, he said that the way to be a great president was to be a commander in chief--in other words be remembered for a great military accomplishment. He saw Iraq as a way to finish his father's unfinished war, and so be better than his dad--both to be remembered and be re-elected. So personally that was the goal. Then we have added to that the Neo-con agenda, and the rest is history.

I agree with the post which said he just doesn't care about small details like how it affects people on the ground. From his grandiose viewpoint, they are mere pawns.

25. * is the poster child of the stumped,
but hardly the only one. The neocon ideology, for instance, tends to consider only individuals under the rule of law in stable nationstates as validly existing. All the rest are potential terrorists or fodder for suicide plots. So a part of the GWOT is then the extension of governmental authorities into all "tribal" regions (such as still exist in Pakistan, Afghanistan, many parts of Africa, the Phillipines, Indonesia, etc)...this being one aspect of the "long war" which disregards the human tendency to live peacefully when not under control of authority, and to resist authority when it attempts to exert control.

33. yep. Our one advantage is that corporations and their tools think people
are dumber and more cowardly than they actually are, so they think lying and bullying will work with everybody the way it works with their employees.

Bush is no exception. He was raised surrounded by servants and yes men, and expects everyone to cower when he throws a hissy fit, not realizing they aren't doing it out of actual fear, but merely fear for their jobs.

If people can't see how they are profiting by submitting to being screwed by the Bushies or business in general, they won't tolerate it.

Like this one:

"It's breathtaking. He has occupied and made rubble of two Muslim countries, and heavily supports Israel, hated by all Muslim countries, in turning Lebanon, a third largely Muslim country, into rubble, and is threatening Syria and Iran, two more Muslim countries. By doing this he is going to inspire Muslims with a passion for American democracy, change the Mideast into fifth-century Athens, and make them love us."

40. So dead on
Bush seemed to think the U.S. would go in there, force democracy on the Middle East and be greeted as a beloved liberator. The bonus he hoped for was control over the democracies that resulted. What he didn't understand is that democracy cannot be created at gunpoint or controlled by a puppetmaster, and citizens who are tortured, abused and killed do not greet their oppressors with joy.

42. Bush is a spoiled brat who expects everyone to do his bidding
and can't understand when they don't. His whole life he has screwed up and his powerful daddy with daddys powerful friends are forever cleaning up after him.
He has never had to take responsibility or answer for anything. He never has had to grow up and learn about the world. He's remained a spoiled rich child.
Since his newest bestest friends, the neocons, have told him the best way to do foreign policy is to go in and bomb it to dust and force democracy down thier throats as the only way, Bushie goes "oh boy!"
He could have asked my mom about how people feel having thier country invaded and occupied. As a girl she was visited by the Nazi's for a few years.
This dipwad and his cronies have no idea what diplomacy is. Or care. Our allies hate us as much as our enemies and the world thinks he's more crazy than we think Iran's president is. They think he's going to blow up the world.

43. Their explanation for failure du jour
whatever it is, is usually wrong about human behavior. I doubt any of them ever were serious efforts to explain what is going on, they are more like the ad hoc flailings of a pathological liar. Given that there are so many zombies in the Republican base, they don't even make an effort at rationality.

Still, there's hope. Eventually, so many lies are told that it is impossible for even the thickest zombie to still believe that Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia. It's not about elections, or security, or terrorism, or the insurgency. It's about the occupation, which is an end in itself. We do need to ask, repeatedly so that people "get it" why it is that we should today believe the same people who were wrong about the Iraqi link to 911, wrong about WMD's and wrong about the insurgency.

I had the pleasure of knocking a few dozen back with him once when I was into that sort of thing. Fred's a funny, cynical, sarcastic guy who rarely holds back in print. In person, he's a bit of a pussycat, though.

Fred also has opinions which I really, really disagree with--and I think a whole lot of the rest of you would agree with me. But even when I don't agree with him I have to admit he has a talent for sticking his knife in places it doesn't belong.

I'm glad to see he's still alive and printing.
