Philly suburbs shift toward Democrats
Philly suburbs shift toward Democrats
By KIMBERLY HEFLING, Associated Press Writer
18 minutes ago

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Growing disenchantment over the Iraq war is proving the great equalizer in many areas, blurring traditional social and demographic distinctions that made it easy to paint sections of the electoral map red or blue.

Take the well-off Philadelphia suburbs, bastions of sidewalk cafes and million-dollar-plus homes. Here, Ginny McGovern, a mother of two and a nutrition therapist, no longer considers herself the lone Democratic voice among a chorus of Republicans.

McGovern said she and her neighbors now are singing from the same page — at least on issues such as the war, spending and President Bush.

"I think they were all for Bush in the beginning, but I think now they've kind of changed their tune a little bit," said McGovern, 42. "It doesn't matter if they're Republican or Democrat, they all think it's unnecessary."

1. Many Republicans don't like Bush - BUT -
The RW propaganda machine does such a good job at demonizing our side that many hold their noses & vote Bush/Republican anyhow.

2. Bucks, Montgomery and Delaware County went (D) in 2004, 2000, 1996, 1992
Let this be a lesson to those of you who make broad generalizations about the rich always voting Republican. The Philly Burbs, the Tri-State suburbs, the SF Bay Area, the Boston and DC suburbs (Fairfax County, VA voted Democratic for president in 2004 for the first time since 1964) are all now Democratic strongholds, at least in presidential races. There is a lot of money is some of these communities.

4. I'm assuming you're referring to West Chester, PA
I'm a little snippy with that because I'm from Westchester County, NY.

5. WC is getting bluer...
but the repubs are still the majority. The ex-county commissioner is a right wing guy responsible for "weneedafence.com". However, I was asked to help out with Lois Murphy's campaign by a fed-up republican.

6. PA Rethugs are getting more radical too
I have lived in Bucks & Montco and the central pa rethug party is totally out of touch with suburban life. Its Dover (home of Intelligent Design) versus Doylestown now. The repugs in the Philly counties are fiscal cons but social libs and don't like the bubba factor of Shrub. The rethugs have lost pa because they can't win these counties anymore.
