Outrage over ads depicting Blair as Hitler

Tony Blair is being compared to Hitler in an advertising campaign against ID cards.

The advert - sponsored by the Lib-Dem party and Labour MP Diane Abbott, and supported by Blur's Damon Albarn - is running in newspapers and on billboards and shows a photo of the Prime Minister with a barcode on his lip like the Nazi leader's moustache. The caption reads: "ID cards have worked well in Europe before." Campaign group NO2ID is behind the advert. It said today: "Blair is not Hitler. But he is building the tools of totalitarianism." Labour's Lord Janner, a leading Jewish parliamentarian, said the advert was "monstrous".

He said: "Hitler was a mass murderer and to make any comparison between him and Tony Blair is stupid and unacceptable."

2. I thought that this was a bit much myself.

I support and contribute to NO2ID, so I won't be making a big fuss about it, but given the money spent on these ads (the full back page of Monday's Guardian was covered with one) I would rather that they set out the very clear practical case against ID cards rather than resorting to rather crude tactics like this.

But as I say, I really couldn't care less that they did it, and the Sturmer Mail is just doing its usual job of stirring up an illiberal fuss.
