Woodward Excerpt Appears in 'Post' With New 9/11 Bombshell

After being scooped by The New York Times, '60 Minutes' and New York's Daily News, The Washington Post comes out with its first excerpt/digest of Bob Woodward's upcoming blockbuster, "State of Denial," about the White House and the Iraq war, on its Sunday front page. The online version went up on Saturday.

After what has already emerged, it is a bit of letdown with nothing really beyond what has already been reported -- including Henry Kissinger's surprising role as a key adviser. But, far more startling, is a separate sidebar/excerpt on a pre-9/11 warning, also mentioned briefly in the early "scoops" but not in this depth.

The Post also reveals today that the 9/11 Commission was not told about this meeting.

The Woodward excerpt describes how, on July 10, 2001, CIA Director George J. Tenet met with his counter terrorism chief, J. Cofer Black, at CIA headquarters "to review the latest on Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda terrorist organization. Black laid out the case, consisting of communications intercepts and other top-secret intelligence showing the increasing likelihood that al-Qaeda would soon attack the United States. The mass of fragments made a compelling case, so compelling to Tenet that he decided he and Black should go to the White House immediately."

Not much is being said about this on TV.....It just amazes me that all these people who didn't do their jobs are promoted and those who did their best in this administration have to resign or are fired.

I don't understand who these group can sleep at night or look at themselves in the mirror.

2. It saddens me that all they want to do is blame somebody else

when they were clearly at fault, their inaction put our country in harms way. Their deliberate inaction. Rumsfeld should have been fired for his inaction on 9-11. At least
history will present the facts of this administration and it will not be kind or biased
towards to the Republican spin.

That bolded comment is huge, in my opinion. I'd like to hear some feedback from some 9/11 Commission members on this report.


On reading Woodward's retelling of that story, Tenet should have done what was right for the country and resigned (or had Cofer Black resign) in order to bring the issue to the nation's and media's attention.

You know, no one likes to be accused of being a "tinfoil hat nutter", but the automatic assumption that the Bush crime family is not Machiavellian enough to involve itself in illegal activities for its own politcal and economic gain seems very naive.
Even the greatly beloved FDR was capable of allowing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor for the psychological impact it would have on the population. This is not a conspiracy theory but a fact of history!
FDR's intentions were no doubt honorable; seeing the threat of Nazism. But this does not excuse future governemnt attempts to use domestic violence as a tool to manipulate the public. Any DUers applaud the Northwoods concept? How about the Tonkin Gulf ploy?
Let's at least admit the possibility that the Bush regime is as evil as we might privately think and act appropriately!
