Hey there, have been lurking for about a year...and have finally been angered enough to start throwing my two cents in. (Might end up more like a nickel or dime...).
First off, the anthropological wunderkids at the Times should do a little homework. Most people that emmigrate from where they are to come to Canada come here to stay, work and enjoy the fine country. Same reason they would come to the States.
Second, no Canadian will ever say that our immigration system doesn't have its flaws and loopholes. Let's be honest though, people intent on hiding in the shadows are usually good at it by design - I'm sure the comparitive ratio of people that slip through the cracks in the Canadian and American systems is pretty even. And, just in case the Times is reading this, although I'm sure they're too busy reading the latest memo from the Whitehouse, about 5 times daily for the cost of around $15 Cdn ($10 U.S.?) two ferries that are able to hold around 20 cars each cross a river (name escapes me) east of Fredericton, New Brunswick into the U.S. and back. No border patrol on either side, lots of dirt roads, trees, water, animals, camping. Really cool fishing community. Great place for a vacation, or to slip into either country unannouced. I for the record, was camping and driving to Bangor to see if it was as creepy as S. King had written.
Third, and I will try to source this out, around 75% of the people that enter the United States illegally from Canada are returning to where they came from...which is the United States. This is something that the Times, Post, et al would never mention. This information was on an immigration piece on the CBC (pretty sure it was the CBC, I'll try to find out) about a year ago when we were having to defend ourselves yet again from a Rove salvo.
I'm certainly not trying to deflect the issue back Stateside, it's just that like usual, the journalism is very ethnocentric and doesn't take into account the other side. (My side of the border as well). I consider myself to be a somewhat content, critically thinking Canadian and it's really annoying having *'s handlers try to rewrite our foreign policy, drug policy, marital policies, etc. The "when all else fails, blame someone else" policy is perhps the one that needs changing the most. Any time we take a verbal or written hit it seems to be because Canada isn't taking the "our opinion is right" point of view that Hatch, Lott, etc. so dearly love. We're engaging in conversation, to communicate with each other so that we can achieve some sort of compassionate balance for all of the people here. When did that become a bad thing?
Anyhow, great site, good community. Now that I've started I guess I'll have to keep on going.
