Madam Speaker didn’t lean over and boink the president on the head with her gavel, or garrote him with her red pashmina.

No one was gelded or cuckolded or left to bleed on the floor of the Senate, as in HBO’s “Rome,” that other gory saga of a declining empire with people who can’t stop talking.

Still, the nation’s capital had the aroma of treachery, as former allies brutally turned on one another. Despite W.’s attempt to salvage his presidency last night by changing the subject and going all domestic-sensitive, Washington was more consumed with betrayal than substance.

The city was riveted by opening statements in the Scooter Libby trial, where the aspens were turning but not in clusters. Scooter’s lawyer claimed that the White House had made his client a scapegoat in the Valerie Plame case to protect Karl Rove because “Boy Genius,” as W. calls him, was critical to keeping the Republican Party in power.

WMDs that don't exist? Missiles that don't exist? And how about that war based on reasons that didn't exist? Had Bush been content to stay in Afghanistan, I would have supported him in that instance. There was no valid reason to invade Iraq. The Iraqis aren't better off and we lost our ethics, morals, and world reputation in the process. There is no way this can be "fixed".

While it's true that Bush's close ties to the Saudis, and the bin Ladin family in particular, is a cause for concern, (not to mention selling control of our PORTS to an emirate) it will take more than the two years left of his term for him to reduce us to the state of Taliban women. Except, of course, for Laura, who deals with it reasonably well.

These are criminals, Republicans or Democrats, their behavior is beyond reprehensible ... watching them all clap like a bunch of hyenas last night at the SOTU and McCain dose off? ... we've worked so hard to get the Democrats back into a majority and they sit there and applaud that criminal ... vomitous humongous ...

Nearly every single time I post a Dowd piece some sweet neocon (on this forum or another) drags out the old "whoreen" slander line again or worse ... it was going to be so nice to be able to explain (in a civilized manner) that some of us just don't want to hear women referred to in that way ... I hope they change their mind and reinstate it eventually ... the closer we get to the next SELelection the more of the Rove Bots we'll be seeing here ...
